Key Points

  • A PSA 10 Holo Gengar from Skyridge traded for $30,494.70 at a Texas GameStop

  • The card’s fair market value was $33,883, with GameStop paying 90% through their Power Packs Buyback Program

  • Five golden tickets for a year of Pokemon releases are still floating around in unopened Series 4 packs

GameStop confirmed yesterday that a customer in Grapevine, Texas traded in a PSA 10 Holo Gengar from the Skyridge set for $30,494.70, marking the highest trade-in in GameStop’s history. The trade is capturing viral attention, but it won’t be the last huge pull we hear about from Power Packs Series 4.

GameStop Power Packs Series 4

A little backstory, first. GameStop has been successfully running their Power Packs over the last few months, offering a blind bag with a mix of sealed cards and pre-graded, pre-slabbed cards. Some of these cards are valued at tens of thousands of dollars.

GameStop launched Power Pack Series 4 on Black Friday with five golden tickets hidden across all units. Winners get every Pokemon TCG quarterly release for 2026, worth around $500-800 in free cards. But the real prize was always the graded chase cards.

We alerted RC readers to cop Power Packs before they sold out. The $70 packs included one PSA-graded card (guaranteed PSA 8 or higher) plus two random booster packs. Series 3 consistently flipped for $90-120 shortly after launch, making sealed packs themselves profitable flips.

For the lucky Grapevine customer, opening their pack revealed something way more valuable than the sealed flip opportunity.

PSA 10 Gengar Trade-in at GameStop

The Gengar in question was only selling for around $5,000 as recently as 2023. What changed? GameStop’s estimated market value matched the highest known sale of the card from back in October, showing significant appreciation over the past two years.

The Skyridge set itself is notoriously difficult to grade. PSA 10s from this era are exceptionally rare, making this Gengar one of the most valuable cards you could realistically pull from a GameStop Power Pack.

GameStop promises to buy back any cards players don’t want at 90 percent of fair market value minus a 6 percent commission. The seller confirmed on Reddit they took the instant payout rather than risking market volatility. Smart move considering sales history wasn’t the greatest, with concerns about a potential $10k downward move.

While the $30K Gengar grab made headlines, don’t forget about the original promotional hook. Five golden tickets are randomly inserted across all Series 4 units, with winners getting every Pokemon TCG quarterly release set for 2026.

That’s genuinely valuable for collectors and resellers. Four quarterly sets at $100-200 each adds up fast, especially if you’re planning to flip sealed product throughout the year. The golden tickets transform a $70 gamble into guaranteed free inventory.

The Future of Power Packs

GameStop’s making a big marketing push around this trade-in. The company noted this transaction followed all required inspection, verification, and compliance procedures, positioning themselves as legitimate players in the graded card market.

The reality? GameStop barely makes profit off card sales and can’t print their own Pokemon cards, so they’ve pivoted to opening packs themselves and reselling the rarest cards through Power Packs. It’s digital slot machines with PSA slabs.

For Series 4 specifically, sealed packs are still available on secondary markets. eBay has listings running $150 to $200, plenty profitable if you copped a few at $100 retail.

Bottom Line

Most Power Pack gamblers aren’t chasing $30K Gengars. They’re hoping to hit a $500-2000 card that makes the $70 investment worthwhile. The trade-in floor means you’re not completely cooked if you brick.

The five golden tickets are still out there in unopened Series 4 packs. If you’re sitting on sealed inventory, opening becomes more tempting knowing there’s guaranteed value through the buyback program plus the golden ticket lottery on top.

For anyone who missed Black Friday entirely, sealed Series 4 packs are available on eBay around $150. You’re paying a premium over the $100 retail, but you’re also buying into a proven program where people are actually hitting valuable cards.

Keep in mind this is final sale gambling. GameStop offers the trade-in safety net, but only through December 13 and only for PSA 8+ cards. If you’re buying sealed packs to open, understand you’re playing slots with slightly better odds than usual thanks to the golden tickets and buyback program.
