Daft Punk’s Interstella 5555 collection dropped last week
New vinyl versions of Discovery were available for $55
Resellers are flipping them for upwards of $200
Feel like taking a trip back to 2003? Daft Punk has been celebrating their breakthrough album Discovery recently, and part of the fun includes a remastered version of their tie-in anime Interstella 5555. New merch, clothes, and exclusive vinyl have dropped. Resellers and fans have been all over the new collection, and it didn’t take long for the hottest items to start flipping for a profit.
Ah, a new day, a new remaster. Taylor’s re-recording and re-releasing her first records, dead men take to the stage as holograms, and the Beatles are using generative AI to produce new and shitty versions of their old sound. 2024 is a great time to listen to music made decades ago.
You’ve probably heard of Daft Punk, and there’s a good chance you’re familiar with their 2001 album Discovery. Many of the songs are still aired today, and the music videos are especially engaging.
Following the release of Discovery, Daft Punk teamed with Toei Animation for a 65 minute long accompanying animated film: Interstella 5555. The music videos for most of the songs on Discovery were pulled from the film, and it’s become a definitive part of Daft Punk’s imagery.
Twenty years later, they’ve made the bold move to sloppily remaster the film with AI upscaling, turning a beloved piece of art into a blurry, heavily interpolated mess.
But hey, it’s their art (technically), who cares if they want to make it ugly. Along with the remaster, Daft Punk has also created new merch for Interstella 5555, and pressed an entirely new and limited edition of Discovery.
The music was pressed on gold vinyl and included an exclusive jacket featuring the original Japanese artwork. Also included was a set of stickers and “numbered Daft Club card”.
The Discovery Interstella 5555 vinyl was $55 and limited to just 5,555 total units, sold through Daft Punk’s website. After extensive promotion from the band along with a limited screening of the upscaled film at the Tribeca Film Festival, fans were very hyped for this drop.
The collection dropped on October 30, and it didn’t take long for stuff to start selling out. The vinyl went first, but fans were also eager to jump on collectable CDs and some of the hoodies.
Right now, Daft Punk Interstella 5555 vinyl are reselling for upwards of $200. They were limited to one per customer unfortunately, so no truly wild profits this time
Still, an easy $150 or so is nothing to sneeze at. If you live in France, this drop was even easier to go for as Daft Punk loaded stock on both their global and French stores. Some US-based resellers elected to use a reshipper, but the relative costs made that a bit too risky for most.
Additionally, we’ve seen a fair number of sales for the Interstella 5555 CDs. These are usually going for around $70 to $80, up from a retail price of $21. Solid profit, but again limited to one per customer.
And that’s pretty much the whole story. Interstella 5555 will be showing at theaters for one night only on December 12; tickets are expected to go on sale November 13. It’s possible new merch might be debuting at the same time, so keep your eyes on the band’s socials in the next few weeks.
In the meantime, subscribe to our newsletter and stay updated on the hottest flips of the season. There’s still plenty of time left in 2024 to make money reselling, so join in the fun and start flipping.
