Have we got any Deadheads reading this blog? We’ve got something you might like to see. Last week, an extremely limited number of Chuck Sperry-designed Grateful Dead posters went live. These Grateful Dead posters are now reselling for hundreds of dollars over retail, with some going for nearly $2,000.

Chuck Sperry is an American artist known for his work on posters and screen prints. He’s connected to musicians like Bob Dylan, Fleetwood Mac, and the Grateful Dead.

The posters we’re looking at today are the Grateful Dead “Bertha” designs produced by Chuck Sperry. They were produced as part of an archival collection that celebrates the Dead’s series of concerts at Capitol Theatre through the 70s.

They depict a smiling woman with flowers in her hair and appropriately psychedelic imagery. This is only the first design from a planned set of 18, with these posters based on the concert on March 20, 1970.

Altogether, there were four different versions of the poster produced. Aside from the standard prints, there were also three different voil variants: lava, rainbow, and sparkle. All of the posters from the collection, foil and standard, were signed and hand-numbered by Chuck Sperry.

This was a very limited collection. The standard posters made up the bulk of the series, being limited to 365, while each foil version was limited to just 65 units each.

Standard posters cost $150, while the foils were $250. The collection was sold through Relix Marketplace, which made it very clear that they did not want people hoarding posters. There was a limit of one print per household and a strict policy to cancel orders that exceeded it.

Fortunately, you didn’t need to buy very many of these to make a solid profit. In fact, just one would be enough. Both foil and standard variants were extremely lucrative.

Chuck Sperry Grateful Dead “Bertha” posters are reselling for upwards of $600 at a time for the standard variants, netting those who picked them up around $450 in profit.

For the quick-fingered resellers that managed to grab a limited-edition variant, the numbers are even better. Foil versions of the Chuck Sperry Grateful Dead posters are easily reselling for more than $1,000. Several sales have edged up to $2,000.

Remember that these retailed for $250 or less. This drop was an opportunity for anyone to score hundreds to thousands of dollars in pure profit. Most of the sales came within 24 hours of the drop.

Surprised? You shouldn’t be. We’ve talked about Grateful Dead posters before, and the market around them is pretty incredible. There are a ton of fans of the band out there willing to drop stacks of cash on limited edition material. All you need to get in on it is a little advanced notice.
