These were one of the most lucrative flips of 2023
Chick-fil-A Classic Cups retail for $3.99 and the promotion runs through July 1, 2026
Golden cups with winning cards have sold on eBay for up to $1,000
Sealed mystery cup packages are flipping for $15 to $20 on eBay
How would you like to win a year’s worth of greasy fast food? That’s exactly what Chick-Fil-A has promised up to 3,000 lucky customers that find a Golden Cup during their current giveaway. Even if chicken isn’t your thing, you should still pay attention to the promotion, as a handful of Chick-Fil-A golden cups have already been found and sold for ridiculous prices.
Chick-fil-A launched their Golden Fan Cup sweepstakes last month as part of their 80th anniversary celebration, and resellers are treating it like a modern treasure hunt. Out of an estimated 5 million plus cups being sold through July, only 3,000 golden cups have been randomly distributed. Each golden cup includes a card redeemable for a year of free Chick-fil-A, which breaks down to 52 free entrees.
The cups cost $4 at participating Chick-fil-A locations and come wrapped in opaque packaging so you can’t see which design you’re getting. There are four regular collectible designs inspired by different eras of the chain’s history, plus the rare golden version. The odds of pulling a golden cup are roughly 1 in 1,868 based on the distribution math.
It seems like Chick-Fil-A will be shuffling out a new limited edition design each month the promo runs. Last month was the “Doodles” design which is now sold out, and now stores are handing out “Classic” designs.
Resellers are making money two different ways on this promotion. The obvious play is finding a golden cup and flipping it for four figures. That’s the lottery ticket. But the consistent money is in flipping sealed mystery packages.
Sealed cups are moving on eBay for $15 to $20 right now. You’re buying at $4 and selling at $15-20, which gives you roughly $11-13 profit after eBay’s 13% fees and shipping costs. That’s not huge money per unit, but it’s clean and repeatable as long as the promotion runs.
The sealed package angle works because buyers want the thrill of potentially opening a golden cup themselves without leaving their house. You’re essentially selling lottery tickets to people who don’t have easy access to Chick-fil-A locations, or who want to buy multiple chances without making repeated store runs.
For the golden cups themselves, the $800-1,000 range reflects what the prize is actually worth. A year of free Chick-fil-A entrees valued at around $8-10 each comes out to roughly $415-520 in real value. But collectors and superfans are paying double that for the novelty and bragging rights.
The cups are only available at “select” Chick-fil-A locations, and distribution is random across the country. Not every store is participating, and inventory varies wildly by location. You’ll need to call ahead or check multiple stores in your area.
The cups can be purchased through the Chick-fil-A app, or in-restaurant. Each purchase is limited to what’s available at that specific location. New cup designs drop every few weeks, which keeps demand fresh throughout the promotion.
Some stores are selling out of the mystery cups quickly as word spreads about the resale market. Others still have full stock. Your best bet is hitting locations in suburban areas where foot traffic is lower but inventory is still available.
If you’re thinking about buying sealed cups in bulk to flip, the math works but requires volume. At $4 retail and $15-20 resale, you need to move serious quantity to make it worth your time compared to other flips. Ten sealed cups would net you roughly $110-130 profit after fees. Twenty cups gets you into the $220-260 range.
The advantage is you can scale this without much risk since the promotion runs for months and you’re not holding perishable inventory. The downside is you’re tying up capital for modest returns unless you find a golden cup in your personal purchases.
The sealed mystery cup flip is solid for steady, low-risk returns if you have access to participating locations. The golden cup chase is pure upside with 1 in 1,868 odds. Buy sealed cups to flip at $15-20 for consistent profit, and treat any golden cup finds as a bonus jackpot.
The promotion runs through July, so there’s time to scale this if sealed package demand holds. Just watch for restocks that could compress margins as more supply hits the market.
