Chicago Field Museum Pokemon Archeops Cards Flip for $250+

The Pokémon Fossil Museum is making its North American debut at Chicago’s Field Museum, running now through April 11, 2027. The exhibition pairs real paleontology with Fossil Pokémon like Tyrantrum and Archeops, letting visitors compare the fictional creatures with actual specimens, including SUE the T. rex. It’s a collaboration between the Field Museum, Japan’s National Museum of Nature and Science, and The Pokémon Company International.

Getting in requires both a general admission ticket (starting at $30 for non-Chicago residents, $21 for residents) and an $18 Pokémon exhibition add-on. The Archeops promo card is handed out at the entrance to visitors with both tickets. Admission is timed and limited, and the earliest currently available date is June 8.

This mirrors what Pokémon did with the Pikachu at the Museum promo at London’s Natural History Museum earlier this year, and the infamous Van Gogh Pikachu collaboration before it. Pokémon has figured out that attaching a promo card to a ticketed experience creates instant hype for the exhibition buoyed by secondary market value.

Cards started hitting eBay within hours of the exhibition opening. Early sold listings came in around $400 on launch-day FOMO. Prices have already pulled back to around $250, and they’re going to keep coming down.

This exhibition runs for nearly a year. Hundreds of cards will be given away every day it’s open. The total production run could realistically exceed 100,000 cards.

The Van Gogh Pikachu and the Pikachu at the Museum card both benefited from hard-to-access, genuinely limited supply. This one does not have that going for it long-term. All of the value here is in the short term, while collectors who can’t get to Chicago are still paying up out of impatience.

If you already have early tickets or a promo card: Congrats. Sell your card(s) ASAP to lock in maximum value from FOMO.

If you’re a Chicago resident considering a visit: The math works. Resident admission runs $39 total. At $250 per card, you’re netting around $178 after eBay fees. If prices cool to $100 to $150 down the line, you’re still clearing $40 to $100 per card on an exhibition you might enjoy regardless.

If you’re thinking about buying on the secondary market: Hard to recommend. You’d be paying $200+ for a card that has nearly a year of additional supply ahead of it.

It’s likely we’ll see additional limited edition Pokemon promo cards popping up at museum exhibitions in the near future. This is a win-win for everyone involved, and it’s clear that at least in the first few days of the exhibition’s opening the cards will resell for a considerate profit.
