After years of licensing issues, the 1997 Berserk anime is getting a Blu-Ray release
Preorders opened in January for $60
Resellers are flipping them for twice that or more
You know Berserk, right? Big sword, big guy. Its logo is emblazoned across countless XXXXXL t-shirts and is a common choice for many a nerd’s first tattoo. Since its premiere in 1989, Berserk has been adapted into an anime three times. Today we’re looking at a Blu-Ray release of the first 1997 anime run. Not only are these popular, they’re reselling at a remarkable premium. Here’s what’s up:
It’s been nearly three years since the death of Berserk’s mangaka, Kentaro Miura. He passed away at just 54 due to a sudden aortic dissection, coming as a sudden shock to Berserk fans and the manga community at large.
With Akira Toriyama dying at 68 just a few weeks ago, people are taking a closer look at Japan’s hellish manga industry. Did you know that manga artists, on average, die over twenty years earlier than the average Japanese male?
You can check out the above tweet thread for more details (you’ll need to translate it from French), but it really is a shocking trend.
What does this all have to Berserk? Well, nothing really. Maybe we could draw a better connection if we spent some time thinking about it, or if we’d even read Berserk in the first place, but come on. This is a scalping blog, and we came here to scalp.
Berserk on Blu-Ray, right. Back in 1997, Berserk got its first anime run. 25 episodes ran for several weeks, and covered the first arc of the manga.
Now a special Blu-Ray release of that series has been produced. This comes after several years of license-juggling in North America, with distributor Discotek only recently acquiring the rights.
For the long-suffering Berserk fans waiting to watch the series through Blu-Ray like Miura intended, their time has come. These Blu-Rays are sold through Crunchyroll and Amazon, although both storefronts are currently sold out.
And where we have sold out stuff, we have stuff that’s reselling. Apparently the Blu-Ray treatment is compelling enough for fans to open their wallets, because we’re already seeing quite a few sales for these.
Right now, a Berserk 1997 Blu-Ray is reselling for anywhere from $60 to nearly $200. Preorders opened in January, so it seems like fans that missed out are regretting that decision.
But don’t stop reading yet. Yes, everything is currently sold out, but Amazon has been restocking these Blu-Rays frequently. We recommend setting up a monitor to watch for restocks, and don’t hesitate to buy.
Or if you’d like to be notified when they come in stock, or you’d prefer to be tipped off when products like these are available to preorder, you should join RC Elite. Members were notified about this flip several months ago, and were able to make preorders easily.
Now that everything is sold out, they’re cashing out for hundreds of dollars in straight up profit. Hard work, sure, but someone has to sit around and click buttons on their computer for a few hours.
