Last week, the box-breaking company Backyard Breaks partnered with Flamethrower Cards for a special product release. 500 Flamethrower “GameChanger” repacks were distributed to GameStop stores across the country, and fans went hunting at their local stores to find one. As days went by and more boxes were found, a number of GameChanger repacks have been listed on eBay. Collectors and fans are paying serious premiums for these, and it looks like resellers are coming out ahead this time.

Backyard Breaks, Flamethrower, and GameChanger Packs

How familiar are you with box-breaking? If you’re not into card collecting, the term might be new to you. Box-breaking is a relatively new development within the hobby, and it refers to a (usually) livestreamed opening of a box of trading cards.

Instead of buying the whole box, collectors bid or purchase an individual team. Any cards from that team that are pulled are sent to that buyer, and a single box can have 30 or more collectors invested.

It’s caught on in recent years for a few reasons. Collectors like it because it’s generally much cheaper for them to bid on their favorite team than buying a pack of random cards, and the livestream aspect adds an element of fun and community to their hobby.

Backyard Breaks is one of the most popular companies behind the trend, and they regularly host livestreams of new packs. They’ve partnered with Flamethrower Cards to open hand-selected repacks in very limited quantities.

A “repack” refers to a third-party packaged collection of cards with varying market values. Flamethrower’s repacks consist of a single card part of a wider set, and the set’s floor and ceiling prices are posted online. Collectors will pay somewhere in the middle of the two, and have the opportunity to get a truly valuable card for less than its market price.

Got all that? Good. Last week, Backyard Breaks announced their latest collaboration with Flamethrower: the GameChanger repack. Rather than being livestreamed, these cards were scattered across hundreds of GameStop stores in the US.

The Flamethrower GameChanger repack was available for $55, but had to be purchased in person. Just 500 of these packs were produced, and each one contained one card. Flamethrower broke down these cards into five tiers:

Rookie, limited to 175
All-Star, limited to 170
MVP, limited to 150
Hall of Fame, limited to just 4
GOAT, limited to a single pack

Backyard Breaks estimated that there were “multiple hundreds of dollars” packed in the entire collection, and claimed that the GOAT card was worth $1,000 or more.

This collaboration was extremely well received within collectors’ circles. The opportunity to nab a valuable card at a low price was compelling, and who doesn’t love a good scavenger hunt? Backyard Breaks would then post a list of participating locations, and encouraged fans to post their openings.

Over the past week, a decent amount of these packs have been found and purchased and videos of them being opened are appearing online. Many of the cards found are worth more than the $55 retail price, making this a great opportunity for card collectors.

Flamethrower GameChanger Packs Resell

While ripping packs is always fun, smart resellers know that flipping sealed packs is less risky, and oftentimes more profitable.

We’ve seen a handful of these Flamethrower GameChanger repacks listed for sale on eBay, and right now they appear to be reselling for upwards of $300.

That’s a profit of over $200 for the lucky resellers that were able to resist the urge to open their packs. While the GOAT card has been found (it’s a PSA 10 Mahomes Rookie card, ~$1,200), there’s still a lot of hype surrounding the drop.

One member of Backyard Breaks’ team has posted a $500 bounty for the GameChanger pack sold at Kahala Mall in Honolulu. Why? According to him: “I JUST THINK ITS JUST FUNNY THAT THERE’S A FLAMETHROWER IN HONOLULU”

As of yet, it doesn’t seem like anyone has taken him up on the offer. Proof of purchase and a sealed box are required.

And that’s pretty much the whole story. This was a novel collaboration between Backyard Breaks and Flamethrower, and a cool way to bring the fun of box-breaking outside of just livestreaming. They’ve labeled this drop as “Series 1”, so expect to see more soon.
