But there's a catch
Analogue’s newest console is the 3D, and it’s sold out
They dropped on the 21st for $250
Resellers have flipped them for up to $450
It’s a big month for retro gamers. Analogue has just released their the “3D”, their take on Nintendo’s N64. Gamers jumped on the sale near-instantly, and it didn’t take long for all of the Analogue 3Ds to sell out. Now resellers are listing their consoles for well above Analogue’s sticker price, and getting plenty of bites. Let’s take a look.
Are you familiar with Analogue? Founded in 2011, Analogue is an American electronics developer that creates modern retakes on classic video game consoles.
We’ve covered their previous successes with their Pocket handhelds, which were a sleek upgrade to Nintendo’s iconic Game Boy. Resellers have been paying close attention to the company since, and now they’re back to line our pockets once again.
This time they’ve built a 2024-spec Nintendo N64. Boasting upgraded hardware and numerous quality-of-life features, the Analogue 3D can output your favorite N64 game in 4K through online or 4 player local multiplayer.
And it looks great on a shelf too. Analogue has always valued the aesthetics in their consoles, and the clean but oh-so-90s design of the 3D helps sell it as a true collectors’ piece.
The Analogue 3D costs $250, and was first made available through Analogue’s website on October 21. Two colors; black and white, were available at launch, with more likely to follow.
Analogue’s consoles are designed around a technology called FPGA: field-programmable gate arrays. Without getting too technical, this allows their retro consoles to interface natively with classic game cartridges with no emulation.
For a consumer product, this is huge. While emulation can be done legally, the technical and legal ramifications in doing so are daunting for a company to fully invest in it. High profile emulation projects like Yuzu and Citra have been shut down following legal issues, so Analogue has taken a clever route to avoid the issue entirely.
The 3D is Analogue’s most ambitious release since the Pocket. The 3D was revealed just five days before it would go on sale, and hype was incredible strong on launch day. Collectors and resellers were both ready, and was no surprise to see the consoles sell out in seconds.
Now the Analogue 3D is reselling for over $400 on eBay. We saw a large batch of sales immediately after the sale, and they’ve continued to trickle in over the last few days. Some sellers have managed to flip their 3Ds for up to $450.
So, potentially $200 or so in profit from a single product. That’s certainly not bad in our book, and a very respectable flip for any reseller that got in early.
Yes, and probably soon. If you’re not familiar with Analogue’s game, just look to how they sold the Pocket. Small batches that drop all at once and sell out, but continuously restocking over time. Folks that missed this drop will another chance to buy soon.
And while that’s nice for the gamers, it’s not ideal for resellers. Initial product launches like this are very profitable in the short run, but frequent restocks will water down the resell market quickly.
If you’re only interested in the 3D as a flip, be careful going for any restocks. Analogue does offer thirty day returns for unopened products, but these are subject to a 15% restocking fee and you’re on the hook for shipping fees – so there’s definitely going to be risk.
Our advice is to wait for Analogue to reveal a special version of the 3D. They’ve done this repeatedly for their Pocket handheld, and is just a matter of time. One-off variants like the glow-in-the-dark Analogue Pocket have flipped for up to $200 over retail.
