Key Points

  • Five N64-inspired colorways launch February 9 at 8 AM PST for $300

  • Previous Funtastic limited editions consistently resell between $400 and $450

  • Each console includes color-matched cables, power adapter, and 16GB SD card preinstalled

If you’ve been following our blog for a while, you know we’re big fans of the Analogue 3D. Using FPGA technology and premium materials to revive the iconic Nintendo N64, the 3D has been a reliable flip for months. New colors, including the iconic “Atomic Purple,” will be releasing tomorrow morning, and these will likely flip for a quick $100 or more in profit after the drop.

Analogue 3D N64 Prototype Editions

Nintendo actually manufactured these colorways back in the late ’90s as part of their internal prototype process, but they never made it to store shelves. Analogue dug into the archives and is bringing them back as limited editions, which is pretty solid for retro gaming collectors who’ve never seen these colors before.

The company is also partnering with 8BitDo again for matching controllers at $45 each, though those won’t ship until April while the consoles start shipping within 24-48 hours of ordering. The controllers are getting the same “highly limited” treatment, so factor that into your buying strategy.

Atomic Purple will probably be the most popular given how iconic that color is in gaming circles, but honestly any of these should perform similarly on the secondary market. Extreme Green and Glacier both have strong nostalgic pulls, and Ghost has that clean, premium look that tends to photograph well in listings.

Set an alarm and be logged into your Analogue account before 8 AM. Have your payment info ready because their site historically struggles under heavy load during these drops. The Funtastic variants sold out in under 15 minutes, and there’s no reason to expect these Prototype editions to last any longer.

Analogue 3D Limited Editions Resell

When Analogue released the translucent Funtastic variants in December, those sold out fast and immediately hit the secondary market. Standard black and white 3D units were already flipping for $400 to $500 at that point, and the limited editions maintained similar pricing despite the higher $300 retail versus the standard model’s $250.

At $300 retail, you’re looking at roughly $100-150 profit per unit after eBay’s 13% fees (around $60 on a $450 sale) and shipping costs. That’s solid but not game-changing like some drops we’ve covered. The real question is whether these Prototype editions command any premium over the Funtastic translucents that are already on the market.

The lesson here is that Analogue’s special colorways don’t necessarily command huge premiums over their regular limited releases in the immediate flip window. The real value comes from holding or from the fact that any Analogue 3D is still printing money because demand is crushing supply across all variants.

Returns are allowed within 30 days but carry a 15% restocking fee ($45 on a $300 purchase), so that eats into margins if you can’t flip. The bigger risk is Analogue announcing yet another color wave, though their track record suggests they space these drops out to maintain value.

8BitDo Prototype Controllers

8BitDo is also launching color-matched controllers tomorrow at the same time through their own store at $45 each. All five colorways (Atomic Purple, Extreme Green, Glacier, Ocean, Ghost) will be available, but here’s the catch: controllers won’t ship until April while the consoles ship in 24-48 hours.

The controllers are labeled “highly limited” just like the consoles, but they’re a trickier flip. At $45 retail plus shipping, you need to hit $70-80 on the secondary market to make decent profit after fees. The Funtastic controllers from the last drop haven’t shown massive premiums, mostly because people buying $400+ consoles on the secondary market can usually just buy a standard controller separately.

That said, if you’re going all-in on the console flip, grabbing a matching controller adds package appeal for buyers who want the complete aesthetic. List them together or separately depending on market demand, but don’t count on controllers alone being a home run.

Bottom Line

$100-150 profit per unit isn’t massive, but it’s reliable money on a product category that’s been consistently performing. Just don’t expect these Prototype editions to command huge premiums over the Funtastic models already on the secondary market. You’re playing volume and consistency here, not hunting a moonshot.
