If you're a reseller, it's looking like a yes
All of the Super Treasure Hunt cars from 2023 were sold as a set
They cost $250 and were limited to 2,000 total units
Resellers bought up the drop and are flipping them for well over retail
Hot Wheels collectors had a chance to make up for bad luck earlier this week. Mattel has rereleased fifteen “Super Treasure Hunt” cars from 2023 as part of new set. For collectors that weren’t able to get the cars they wanted in stores, this was an opportunity to pick them up all at once. The set sold out fast, and now resellers are joining in on the fun by flipping them for an easy $200 to $300 in straight up profit. Let’s strap in.
So let’s clarify what we’re talking about. Hot Wheels have been around for years, and there are plenty of people buying them. From kids, to casual adult fans that like to pick up their favorite models, to hardcore collectors carefully tracking new releases and rare cars.
Treasure Hunt cars are limited designs angled towards collectors. Each year, Hot Wheels spins up new runs of particular cars with distinct paintjobs and extra details, and collectors start hunting for them.
There are also “Super Treasure Hunts” that take this rarity to a next level. It works similarly to Chase variants in Funko collecting; small details are tweaked, or a new decal is applied to denote that it’s a Super.
It takes a careful eye to spot one, and you need to know what you’re looking for. For collectors, rare is rare, and Super Treasure Hunt cars are very popular.
Earlier this week, Mattel released a bundle of the fifteen Super Treasure Hunt cars produced through 2023.
The 2023 Super Treasure Hunt set cost $250, and was limited to 2,000 units total. These were only sold through Mattel’s website. The sale was exclusive to Mattel’s “Red Line Club” members, with a year’s membership costing $10.
Here’s the full list of cars in the set:
All of the cars come individually packaged on their own blister card and box. Customers were limited to one set per household.
The sale was not a fun experience for Hot Wheels collectors. These sets sold out extremely fast, and many people reported website problems and Captcha issues. Those that managed to enter the queue found all of the cars sold out before they could even get on the site.
Hey, we were just talking about Games Workshop and the recent Warhammer books too. What a coincidence.
Anyways, there was still hope for the people that missed out.
After all, if you’re already willing to pay $250 for a set of cars, what’s another few hundred on top? Scalpers have to feed their families too!
Right now, the 2023 Hot Wheels Super Treasure Hunt set is reselling for around $450 at a time with solid volume. Some sellers have managed to turn theirs around for upwards of $600, presumably to some very desperate collectors.
If you were on top of things and got an earlier spot in the queue, congratulations! You just made $200+ for clicking a few buttons.
