Consoles are supposed to get cheaper as they age, not command a markup on top of an already inflated price tag. Despite the next generation of console only a few years out, Sony’s priciest current-gen box just became one of the hottest items on eBay. The trigger isn’t a hardware shortage or a surprise discount. It’s Grand Theft Auto 6. Rockstar’s recent gameplay reveal and marketing deal with Sony have sent buyers scrambling for the console they believe gives them the best shot at playing GTA 6 the way it’s meant to be played.

GTA 6 Players Want PS5 Pros

Sony launched the PS5 Pro on November 7, 2024 at $699.99 as a mid-generation upgrade. The pitch was a bigger GPU with 67 percent more compute units than the base PS5, faster memory, and a new upscaling feature called PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution.

That $699.99 price didn’t hold. Sony raised it to $749.99 in August 2025, then to $899.99 this past April, a jump the company attributed to rising memory costs.

Rockstar dropped its GTA 6 Extended Look gameplay reveal in late August, confirming the game will run at 30fps on consoles at launch, including the PS5 Pro.

Gamers expected the Pro’s extra horsepower to translate into a smoother experience than the base PS5. Rockstar and Sony have signed a marketing deal ahead of the game’s launch, stating that GTA 6 “plays best” on PlayStation.

What that actually means is pretty nebulous. The PS5 Pro does have a beefier GPU and can probably make GTA 6 look a little prettier, but it’s unlikely to provide any significant boosts to framerate.

PS5 Pro Bundles Explode on eBay

Of course, you don’t need to give gamers much of a reason to spend their money on overpriced consoles. Even though Rockstar hasn’t provided any solid information on how the PS5 Pro will affect the experience compared to base consoles, we’ve seen a massive spike in demand for the consoles following Rockstar’s Extended Look trailer.

PS5 Pro console bundles are currently sold out through PlayStation Direct, and gamers are turning to eBay to secure their order. New PS5 Pro bundles sealed in the box are currently flipping for around $1,200, while used consoles are reselling for $900 to $1,000.

It’s not unusual to see a console reselling above MSRP, but that’s because a manufacturer is offering a limited edition variant, or demand outpaces supply during a launch period.

But the PS5 Pro is nearly two years old at this point, and we’re over five years into this current generation of hardware. The PS6 is expected to launch in two years or less. This level of demand for a console two years into its lifecycle is unprecedented, and it goes to show that the hype around GTA 6 has rippling effect that reach further than you might expect.

We’ll put it this way: if you had bought a PS5 Pro in 2024 for $700, you could have used it every day for two years, then sold it on eBay for $200 more than you paid. That has never happened before with any comparable console.

Bottom Line

Finding a PS5 Pro bundle at retail is going to be a challenge. Sony restocks them semi-frequently, but new stock is bought up quickly. Until GTA 6 launches and probably a few months afterwards, expect things to stay mostly the same. In fact, prices for PS5 Pro bundles may even rise in the weeks before launch.

A lot of this demand is speculative, built on the assumption that the Pro will feel meaningfully better for GTA 6 than the base console, something Rockstar hasn’t fully confirmed.
