PlayStation’s 30th Anniversary collection has sold out
PS5 Pros were the highlight, retailing for $1,000 and flipping for up to $4,000
Controllers and PS5 Digitals are also reselling
Well, time for a victory lap. After dropping exclusively through PS Direct yesterday morning, Sony’s PlayStation 30th Anniversary Collection is a huge hit. Everything has sold out, even at some pretty intimidating retail prices. The PS5 Pros were the highlight of the drop, and these are already exceeding our expectations. In less than 24 hours, we’ve seen dozens of sales and easy triple-digit profits. Let’s dig in.
If you’re not a gamer or a reseller (how did you find this article?), you might have missed yesterday’s big news. Sony dropped their highly awaited PlayStation 30th Anniversary Collection, and everything sold out.
You can check out our full writeup here, but we’ll just reiterate the basics. The PlayStation 30th Anniversary Collection included two exclusive variants of the PS5, one of which was the extremely limited PS5 Pro variant.
Also released were Anniversary DualSense and DualSense Edge controllers, along with PlayStation’s Portal remote controller.
Prices were not revealed ahead of time. PS5 Pro Anniversary consoles were an even $1,000, which was a little less than we were expecting. Standard PS5s were $500; controllers ranged from $200 to $80.
Obviously, the Pro bundles sold out first and nearly instantly. Over the course of the day, the rest of the PlayStation 30th Anniversary collection sold out. PS5 Pro preorders also opened at the same time, and were the only items available by the end of the day.
We knew this collection would be profitable. We knew everything would sell out. We knew gamers and collectors would pay a serious markup to get one – but we didn’t know just how big those numbers would be.
Ahead of the release, we (conservatively) predicted a minimum resale price of $2,000. We were right, but things didn’t stop there. Right now, PS5 Pro Anniversary bundles are reselling for more than $3,000 on average, with some sales creeping up to almost $5,000.
Hopefully those gamers will still have cash left over to buy the same games that released back in 2015 all the new and exciting titles Sony has brought to the PS5.
Good question. You might remember when the PS5 Pro was originally revealed, and gamers tore into Sony for its $700 price tag. Why are they so eager to throw down thousands for this console?
Well, for one, it’s rare. Sony limited production of the PS5 Pro Anniversary bundle to just 12,300 units, globally. We don’t know how many people queued to buy these consoles, but it was clear that there wouldn’t be enough to go around.
Sony has always held a larger share of the console market, and recent sales estimates for the PS5 fall somewhere in the 50 million+ range. Compare that to the 12,300 Pro bundles sold, and you get a pretty simple equation for eyeball-popping prices on eBay.
But that’s not all. While the obvious star of this drop was the PS5 Pro bundle, the various other controllers and standard PS5 were still quite popular. Following the release, we’ve seen plenty of sales for these items.
The most popular are the PS5 DualSense Edge Anniversary controllers. We heard rumors before the release that these might be somewhat limited, and now we’re seeing them flip for around $400 at a time, after retailing for $220.
Also reselling are the Anniversary DualSense and PlayStation Portal controllers. We covered the release of the Portal last year, and saw those flipping for well over retail. PlayStation Portal Anniversary editions reselling for over $300, while the DualSenses are hovering at about $130
Modest profit, sure, but a hell of a lot easier to buy than the Pros.
And to our surprise, even the PS5 Digital Anniversary bundles are flipping for remarkable profits. These feature the same hardware as the PS5 that launched in 2020, just wrapped in a special gray skin.
After retailing from Sony for $500, PS5 Digital Anniversary bundles are reselling for up to $1,000, but in much lower volume. At least one poor soul accidentally paid over $3,000 for one, likely mistaking it for a Pro bundle.
We expect to see prices on these consoles come down fairly soon. They’ll still go above retail, but $1,000 is pretty hefty, especially when you consider the PS5 Pro will be releasing worldwide in November.
And that’s the whole story, more or less. Yesterday was the biggest console-related feast we’ve had in years. The resellers fast and lucky enough to cop are now taking in thousands of dollars of profit for a few minutes of clicking.
You did have to wake up kind of early though, so it wasn’t that easy. If you want to learn more about reselling and get in on flips like these in the future, you need to subscribe to our newsletter. We cover new products every day, but you’re not going to hear about any of them if you’re not subscribed.
