Key Points

  • Kavinsky died at this home on Tuesday at age 50

  • A signed copy of his 2013 debut album OutRun sold for $1,000 on eBay today

  • Limited edition action figures and watches from his catalog are reselling for up to $900

“Drive” fans and electronica enthusiasts were shocked to hear the French DJ and producer Kavinsky died today of a suspected stroke. Resellers and collectors were quick to begin buying up the available merch on the market, and prices are quickly surging. This is a macabre but fairly predictable phenomenon following a celebrity death, and anything with the star’s signature will see the sharpest spike in value.

Who Was Kavinsky?

Vincent Belorgey, who performed as Kavinsky, built his career around a fictional persona: a driver revived after a fatal crash to make electronic music. That backstory shaped his entire sound, a synth-heavy throwback to 1980s film scores.

His breakout single “Nightcall” appeared in the opening credits of Ryan Gosling’s 2011 film Drive and later closed out the 2024 Paris Olympics. It’s recognized as one of the most recognizable tracks in modern electronic music, and Kavinsky is credited with a surge in interest for 80s-inspired synthwave music.

His debut album OutRun followed in 2013, built around that same neon-drenched aesthetic, with “Nightcall” as its centerpiece. He’d toured with Daft Punk and Justice early in his career and released a follow-up album, Reborn, in 2022. Alongside the music, Kavinsky’s team put out limited merch over the years tied to his driver persona, including collectible action figures and a watch produced in collaboration with Yema.

eBay has been lit up with new sales over the last twelve hours. One of the action figures went for close to $200, and a watch cleared over $900. None of these are officially reissued items. Every sale is coming from existing owners parting with pieces from their personal collections, and many of these were likely preexisting eBay listings sniped by speculators following the news of Kavinsky’s death.

That limited original run is exactly why prices are moving so fast. A signed OutRun vinyl sold for $1,000 today, well above what signed copies were fetching before his death.

Kavinsky Signed Vinyl Watch for Sale

This is a familiar cycle for anyone who’s watched the secondary market react to an unexpected celebrity death. Memorabilia that sat modestly priced for years suddenly becomes a way for fans to hold onto something tied to the artist, and speculators recognize the window is short. The first 72 hours after a death like this typically produce the heaviest volume of sales, as buyers rush in before prices climb and before the initial wave of attention fades.

Bottom Line

If you’re holding Kavinsky vinyl or merch, this is the window to sell into strength rather than wait. Buyers should be cautious, though. These are individual collector sales with no manufacturer backing, no return policy, and no way to verify authenticity beyond the seller’s word, so factor that risk in before paying a premium for anything claiming to be signed or limited. Prices this early in a death-driven spike can also correct hard once the initial rush passes.

Note that Kavinsky’s merch store is still accepting orders. This includes a satin jacket and pin set, both limited to 500 units, as well as multiple copies of his albums on vinyl.
