No, Clawdbot is Not Causing a Mac Mini Shortage

Clawdbot launched less than a month ago as a personal AI assistant that runs locally on your own hardware. Unlike ChatGPT or regular Claude which live in the cloud, Clawdbot gives you a 24/7 AI that you control completely, running on whatever computer you want. The project’s creator Peter Steinberger built it to work with WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord, Slack, and pretty much every messaging platform, turning any old computer into your personal assistant.

The Mac Mini became the go-to hardware for hobbyists because it’s cheap, efficient, and powerful enough to run AI workloads without sounding like a jet engine. Federico Viticci from MacStories called it the future of personal AI assistants. Early adopters on Twitter have been posting their setups nonstop, clearing email inboxes, automating workflows, even building entire websites from their phones by messaging their home Mac Mini.

This created speculation that Mac Minis would sell out as more people discovered Clawdbot. A recent Medium article claimed AI enthusiasts are “racing to buy Mac Minis.” A few tech sites ran headlines about units “flying off shelves.”

The fears come after weeks of hardware shortages triggered by the AI boom, which most obviously reflected in the skyrocketing price of RAM. It’s expected that prices will continue to rise for DDR5 and DDR4 through 2026, so it’s understandable that consumers are anxious right now.

We checked every major retailer. Mac Minis are sitting in stock everywhere. Amazon has them at $499. Microcenter is loaded with units at $399. Best Buy, B&H, Apple’s own store all showing immediate availability with no shipping delays. Some Microcenter locations that were briefly out of stock a week or two ago have received fresh shipments.

The “shortage” narrative appears to be more social media hype than actual supply constraint. Apple sold millions of these things since the M4 redesign in October 2024, and there’s zero indication production can’t meet current demand. Even during the holiday shopping season when sales were strong, stock remained available.

If you already own an older Mac Mini (M1, M2, even Intel models), Clawdbot could boost its resale value slightly. The software runs on older hardware just fine, requiring only 1GB RAM and 500MB storage. A Mac Mini that was worth $200-300 last month might fetch $50-100 more now to someone who specifically wants it for Clawdbot but doesn’t want to spend $499.

Check your local Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. If you can source used Mac Minis cheap (under $150 for older Intel models, under $300 for M1), there might be a small flip to Clawdbot enthusiasts who don’t know the software runs on cheap hardware. Market these specifically as “ready for Clawdbot” and you could see some interest, maybe.

Don’t rush to buy Mac Minis expecting a resale windfall. Stock is plentiful, prices are actually dropping with sales, and the supposed shortage is more Twitter narrative than market reality. This is not a flip-it-quick opportunity.

If you personally want to run Clawdbot, now’s actually a great time to buy since prices are $100-200 below retail at various stores. But as a resale play, pass on this one. The risk outweighs potential profit, and you’re more likely to eat return shipping costs than make meaningful money.

Keep it on your radar though. AI tools can create overnight market shifts, and if Clawdbot hits critical mass, the calculus could change. For now, it’s hype without substance for resellers.
