The Tron: Ares booth at SDCC sold unique vinyl records for $20
Just 2,500 were produced and were in high demand during the event
Resellers are flipping them for up to $200
As usual, Comic Con is proving to be a great time for fans and resellers alike. We’ve seen all kinds of exclusive merch drop and resell for massive profits. This time, San Diego Comic Con attendees were able to pick up exclusive vinyl versions of the soundtrack produced for “Tron: Ares”. These are running up fast on eBay, with resellers flipping them for nearly ten times their retail price. Let’s check it out.
If you haven’t heard, a new Tron film is on the way. “Tron: Ares” is set for release this September, and is scored by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross of Nine Inch Nails. Notably, this is the first soundtrack credited to NIN; prior to now they’ve used their given names when scoring films.
The soundtrack will be released separately as a 24-track album through Interscope following the film’s release, and they’ve released the first single “As Alive As You Need Me to Be” for fans to get a taste.
Preorders for the “Tron: Ares” soundtrack are available right now for a variety of media, but attendees to last weekend’s San Diego Comic Con were able to pick up something truly special.
Just 2,500 special edition “Tron: Ares” vinyl records were sold at the film’s booth during SDCC. These are pressed on a unique, hexagonal red vinyl. As a 7″ vinyl, it’s not clear if these records contain all the songs from the soundtrack or only the released single (we’re guessing the latter).
SDCC-exclusive “Tron: Ares” vinyl were sold for $20 while supplies lasted. We’ve heard reports from attendees that the “Ares” booth was an absolute zoo with fans fighting for merch.
You’re about to see why. With only 2,500 of these records made they were extremely popular among collectors, and there wouldn’t be nearly enough supply to go around.
Right now, SDCC “Tron: Ares” vinyl records are reselling for around $175. A handful have flipped for upwards of $200, more than ten times what they sold for at the SDCC booth.
SDCC ticket prices vary, but buying a daily pass can range anywhere from $50 to $70, while a full 5-day pass usually ranges around $360. To put it simply, buying just one of these vinyl records and selling it for a profit goes a long way towards covering your ticket price to attend the convention.
By buying and selling other SDCC merch, many attendees were able to offset their costs and even make a profit by attending SDCC. Keep that in mind if you’re considering a trip to Comic Con any time soon.
