Boston Scally sold their Christmas-themed Kringle hats for $52
They were available in limited batches over a twelve day period
Resellers are flipping them for over $150
Earlier this week, notable hatmaker Boston Scally Co. dropped a new and highly limited addition to their website. The “Kringle” Scally cap is a festive take on a classic design, and quickly took off in hat collectors’ circles (those are a thing, right?) In any case, these Kringle Scally hats sold out very fast, and we’ve been watching them flip for over three times their retail price over the last few days.
Are you bald? Do you like wearing hats, but still want people to know that there’s not a single hair left on your head? You need a flat cap, also known as a scally cap.
Iconic among classic golfers, fans of Peaky Blinders, and the alopecic alike, these are simply flat-topped hats, usually made from wool. They’re often associated with the 20th working class, especially within the Scotch-Irish immigrant community.
Boston Scally Co. is one company that draws on this heritage. They produce their Scally caps in a variety of designs, and are quite popular among fans of the design. For Christmas, Boston Scally Co. produced a limited number of “Kringle” caps in crimson and green plaid.
The Boston Scally Co. Kringle was sold for $52 exclusively through their website and billed as a “collector’s edition hat”. The inside has a Kringle patch sewn in, and the hats are made from a wool/poly blend in a herringbone pattern.
The company insisted that these hats were a one-time only opportunity, writing that “once it’s gone, it’s gone!” The hats themselves were sold over 12 days starting on December 8, with new stock being loaded every day.
Each drop was pretty limited, and sold out quickly. This generated considerable hype among collectors, and it wasn’t long before people turned to a reseller to get their fix. How much do you think they’d pay to get one?
At the moment, Boston Scally Co. Kringle hats are reselling for $120 to $200 at a time. Worth it? That’s up to the dorks buying them to decide, but resellers certainly aren’t complaining.
If you managed to flip your hat for $150, this was an easy way to triple your money with minimal effort. It’s hard to beat that kind of profit, especially considering you had twelve chances to buy one from Boston Scally Co.
And if you think about it, this flip really embodies the Christmas spirit: generous people sharing their money with those who really need it (resellers).
