Toby Keith’s estate is selling bobbleheads on his website for $40
They sold out in a few hours
Resellers are flipping them for around three times that
Earlier this month, a new line of officially licensed Toby Keith ceramic bobbleheads were sold through his online store. Fans were quick to pick them up, and everything sold out fast. Now resellers have begun flipping them for easy profits. It’s a little over a month since his death, and some people are questioning if that’s ethical. Was it ethical for his estate to produce no merchandise so soon? Is reselling ever ethical?
If you missed the news, Toby Keith died of stomach cancer in early February. He was diagnosed with the disease in 2021, and spent the last few years fighting it through chemotherapy and radiation treatments.
For anyone that went to high school or college through the 2010’s, Keith’s “Red Solo Cup” is probably burned into your brain. His career included numerous trips to perform for troops overseas, a short-lived feud with the Dixie Chicks, and a personal invitation to perform for Donald Trump after his 2016 win.
And what better way to celebrate his life than with a bobblehead? Make no mistake, this no cheap plastic knockoff either; this is a high quality ceramic collectible, produced and sold for $40 within a month of Keith’s death.
It’s 7″ tall with a fair amount of detail. Keith is depicted with an acoustic guitar and patterned cowboy hat.
If Toby Keith’s estate can sell these for a profit, why can’t we? Since these bobbleheads went live, resellers have kept a close eye on them and now that they’re sold out, the profits are rolling in.
Right now, official Toby Keith Bobbleheads are reselling for around $120. Considering how easy these were to buy and the size of Keith’s fanbase, this is a pretty solid flip.
Reselling items related to a celebrity’s death can be pretty touchy. When Kobe Bryant died, StockX showed huge spikes in both prices and sale volumes for Kobe shoes.
People got pretty pissed off about this, especially towards resellers. You can make up your own mind about the issue, but we have to wonder why people feel the need to rush out and buy merchandise after a celebrity dies. Why do you want to buy Kobes for $500 a week after his death? And why are you getting mad at a reseller scalping you when you’re the one willing to pay that price?
At least Keith’s estate is getting a check for these bobbleheads. If people want them badly enough to pay a reseller triple the retail price, that seems like a win for everyone.
Anyways, subscribe to our newsletter for more updates on the latest flips. We just put out an article on the upcoming Dune 2 IMAX film strips that are reselling for $100+. If you’re planning to make a trip to the theater, make sure you check that out first.
