There is a new version of Monopoly Prizm: NBA Edition
Sets are $40 and booster packs are sold separately for $30
Resellers are speculating on the long-term value of Wembanyama cards
As we all know, cards are a big business these days. The last ten years have seen the hobby grow tremendously, and manufacturers continue to expand with new products. Last year, Panini and Mattel worked together to produce a new version of Monopoly. Now they’re back with its second edition. Here’s everything you need to know about the 2024 Monopoly Prizm collection.
So let’s go back to 2023. It was only two weeks ago so it shouldn’t be too hard. Around this time last year, Panini and Mattel announced they would be collaborating to produce Monopoly Prizm: NBA Edition.
As far as licensed Monopoly games go, this was actually pretty unique. Properties were replaced with NBA games, and players compete by opening packs of cards to “draft” a team. Controlling NBA games earns you points when other players land on them, and can level them up.
While the game is cool, it’s the booster packs that matter. Trading cards are a big business, and the 2023 Monopoly Prizm packs caught the eye of collectors. Resellers were able to make easy money by flipping sealed packs.
Now Mattel is introducing a new version of Monopoly Prizm. The game plays the same way, but there are new cards and booster packs in the mix.
Most importantly, Victor Wembanyama is a prime feature in this set. If that name isn’t familiar, we’ll give a brief recap. Wembanyama, or Wemby, was 2023’s first round draft pick. The seven-foot-tall French player has been in the spotlight for years now, and finally made his NBA debut last year.
Pretty much everything related to Wembanyama has major speculative value. Rookie cards, jerseys, autographs; Wemby is anticipated to be a huge star, and people want to get in early.
And that’s a huge reason behind why collectors are interested in the 2024 Monopoly Prizm: NBA Edition. Pulling a 2024 Monopoly Wembanyama card is a big deal, and the prices reflect it.
The new Monopoly Prizm: NBA cards are available in two ways: you can either buy the full Monopoly set for $40 or individual boosters for $30.
The full set includes one 8-card starter pack and two 4-card Prizm packs for a total of 16 cards, while booster packs have six 4-card Prizm packs for a total of 24 cards. The boosters are generally a better bet, but it’s still possible to make a profit by flipping the Monopoly set.
It’s still early and these have only just begun to resell. We’ve seen a few sales for them on eBay for booster packs at around $50 each.
It’s best to bundle them as lots. Last year, resellers could list 5 to 10 boosters together and sell the whole thing at a modest markup.
And if you’re a collector or a Monopoly fan, these are a cool thing to own anyway. Who knows, maybe in a few years Monopoly Prizm sets will be the most desirable collectible out there.
