Roblox has quickly become the sleeper hit of the decade. Released in 2006 and continuously growing over the years, it rebranded itself from a game to a “metaverse”. What you need to understand is that Roblox is a platform for tons of smaller games to build on. One of the most popular of these is Pet Simulator X. On February 26, Pet Simulator X (not Roblox!) sold a limited amount of plushes, and these would rapidly increase in price on the aftermarket. Why? Let’s get into it.

What is Pet Simulator X?

Within Roblox, there are tons of individual games. Anyone can create one. The vast majority are developed by a single person, hobbyists, or just literal children. Some are supported by dedicated studios which grew with the game’s popularity.

If you browse the home page for Roblox for a few minutes you can get a sense for the variety of games, which can be pretty staggering.

One thing you’ll notice is the disparity in player count. While Roblox has tons of players, many of them will cluster on the most popular games. Pet Simulator X is one of these. Currently, there are 90,000 players on this one game during the Wednesday morning this article is being written.

Pet Simulator X players will focus on unlocking, trading, and collecting various pets. The game is built around rarity; some pets are much rarer and more valuable than others, and therefore desirable. Additionally, Roblox has its own economy built around Robux. Users can actually buy ad space on Roblox.com with Robux to link back to their own pages, where they can sell goods for Robux. The whole experience is kind of surreal if you’re not used to it.

So, we have a game within a game built around principles of scarcity, collectability, and an emphasis on in-game trade. Sounds like a good opportunity for resellers. A quick google search reveals tons of results for potential marketplaces for Pet Simulator X, so the demand is there.

But that’s not what we’re focusing on. Today we’re looking at the Titanic Balloon Cat plushes, a real world piece of merchandise produced for Pet Simulator X.

In January 2023, PSX developer BIG Games put out a tweet teasing the upcoming plush release. Now, this wasn’t the first time they’ve produced merch, but this tweet gained significant attention, racking up 10,000+ likes and nearly a thousand retweets quickly.

They continued to build hype through the month, and dropped another tweet saying that these Titanic plushes would come with an exclusive in-game pet.

At this point, Pet Simulator X fans became extremely interested in the upcoming merch drop. In-game pets included with merch was nothing new, but the upcoming Titanic Balloon Cat plushes were special. The pets obtained from the Titanic Balloon Cat plushes were an upgraded version of an already hard to obtain item in the game, so buying this plush was essentially a cheat code.

Finally, a release date for February 26 was announced. Additionally, BIG Games made it clear that the plushes would be both extremely limited, and would NOT restock. Two factors that basically scream “resell me”.

This was also the first time the Red Titanic Balloon Cat plush was revealed.

Was there a difference between the Red and Blue Balloon Cat plushes?

Not really, no. There was no difference in production for the Red and Blue Titanic Balloon Cat plushes. Both were functionally the same, included an in-game pet, and 1,000 were produced each. That said, there was a difference in demand for them.

The Blue Titanic Balloon Cat plush was more popular than the Red. When the sales link for these went up, Blue plushes sold out in about 4 minutes, while it took the Red around 8 minutes to clear stock.

How much did the Titanic Balloon Cat plushes cost?

When they went up for sale on February 26, the Titanic Balloon Cat plushes sold for $250. This is a significantly higher price than previous merch offerings from BIG Games, at $50.

Despite the price hike, fans were still hellbent on buying up these plushes when they went up for sale.

Did the Titanic Balloon Cat plushes resell?

One thing we should mention first is that these were relatively easy to take advantage of. While a sub-ten minute sell out time may sound intimidating, picking up one of these plushes was not hard with advanced warning. Considering BIG Games put out the release date and time well in advance of the drop, a prepared reseller had little difficulty buying one.

Once you had a Titanic Balloon Cat plush order secured, it wasn’t hard to resell it. Given the limited production (1,000 per color) and promise of no future restocks, fans who missed out were willing to pay significantly over the retail price for one.

The same day these plushes sold out they began reselling on eBay. Most listings started at $700-$800, and easily resold for that amount.

It’s interesting to sort through the sold listings for the plushes on eBay. Titanic Balloon Cat plushes with DLC code are the ones that resell for $750+. If a seller tries to sell a plush without the code, prices plummet to around $300. This shows that almost all the demand for the plush was built around the in-game item.
