Why Resellers Bought VaultBox Series 4

If coins are your thing, you might have already heard about VaultBox. All the fun of gambling with none of the cigarette smoke, VaultBox is an innovative way for coin collectors to get rare pieces at a fraction of their normal cost. We’ve seen several drops from them this year, with the VaultBox Series 4 drop taking place yesterday morning. Stick around as we take a look at why VaultBox is so popular with collectors and resellers.

What is VaultBox?

Trading cards have been big lately. From Pokemon to Topps, even if you’re not interested in cards, you’ve got to be aware of how popular they’ve been the last few years. A huge part of their draw is the mysterious nature of the cards: you know what cards might be in a pack, but the only way to find out is to rip it open.

Lately we’ve seen other companies try to adapt the experience of opening a pack of cards into new formats. Probably the most notable example is the recent “Blind Bag” drop from Santa Cruz Skateboards, where a variety of different skateboard decks were randomly distributed.

Now coin collectors can get in on the fun. VaultBox is a company that sells a random assortment of graded and slabbed coins in a single package (the VaultBox). The coins included may be minor collectibles, or extremely valuable, just like a trading card pack

Since January 2023, VaultBox has sold four different drops. The latest was yesterday, VaultBox Series 4. One thing notable about VaultBox coins is they all come pre-graded by NGC, which is the first choice grading house for many coin collectors.

VaultBox publishes a list of possible coins for every series. These always follow a particular theme, and many of the coins are quite valuable. Prices and number of coins per VaultBox have varies between seasons, with collections of three coins going for $500 or just one coin being sold for $200.

How does VaultBox distribute coins fairly?

Because VaultBox is essentially repackaging aftermarket coins, it does raise the question of how they’re sending them out, and if the distribution is fair.

Here’s how it works: After determining what coins will be part of a series, VaultBox ships all of their coins to NGC to be graded on the NGCX 10 point scale. NGC is a third party that has no ownership stake in VaultBox.

After grading them, NGC then seals all of the coins and packages them in VaultBoxes, and then ships the sealed boxes back to the VaultBox company. This way, nobody involved knows what box has what coins.

VaultBox Series 4 Details

Every VaultBox drop comes with a theme. For Series 4, that theme was Silver Dollars: Past Meets Present. As you can probably imagine, there’s a lot of silver in these boxes! For a full list of coins, check VaultBox’s distribution list here.

VaultBox Series 4 boxes included one coin for $229 each. Every coin comes pre-graded and pre-slabbed; buyers were limited to three coins per household. Something worth noting is that the slabs for VaultBox coins are unique, with a VaultBox badge and series label clearly denoted.

VaultBox divides their coins into two categories: Red cores and Black cores, which is reflected in the color of the coin’s slab.

Red core coins are the rarest and most valuable coins in a series. There were around 450 possible Red core coins in VaultBox Series 4, including coins like a 1885-CC $1 Morgan Silver Dollar graded at 9.7, or a 1986 $1 American Silver Eagle graded mint 10. Coins like these are easily capable of paying for the box many times over.

Black core coins are less valuable, but still popular for collectors. The distinction between Red and Black allows collectors to instantly evaluate their coins as soon as they open their VaultBox.

Addtionally, even if a collector doesn’t pull a particularly valuable coin, there’s still a potential to make a profit through VaultBox’s bounty program.

VaultBox Series 4 Bounties

To promote a thriving aftermarket for these coins, VaultBox promotes a bounty program for each series. Essentially, they publish a few lists of coins and conditions under a particular theme, and the first collector to show they have all the listed coins wins a bounty.

For VaultBox Series 4, there are three different bounties.

Only coins in a VaultBox Series 4 slab are eligible for a bounty, and they must be graded at or above the minimum grade for the bounty.

At $229 per box, a buyer would need to spend between $7,000 and $12,000 to get enough VaultBoxes for these bounties, but by doing so they would build an extremely valuable collection. Remember, these bounties are just rewards for a collector; you get to keep the coins even if you win.

VaultBox Series 4 Resellers

With such a popular product and a potential to make money by fulfilling bounties, VaultBox Series 4 boxes have been enormously popular with collectors.

You know who else liked these boxes? Resellers. A ton of Series 4 VaultBoxes were picked up by members of RC Elite. Previous drops from VaultBox have been extremely profitable, with Series 3 VaultBoxes reselling for upwards of $400.

We might have to wait a little for sales to start rolling in, but VaultBox has clearly hit on something big this concept, and collectors love it.

Expect to see a sizable market for VaultBox Series 4 and the various coins included. There’s a whole lot of potential flips out there, and all we need to is wait for the boxes to start shipping.
