Lego Game Boy 72046 Sets Resell

They might’ve started out as a kids toy, but plenty of grown-ups enjoy building Legos. The brand has expanded with many new designs targeted at adults, from Friends to Seinfeld to the Lord of the Rings.

One of their newest designs harkens back to the halcyon days of 1990. Lego set 72046 is a 421-piece 1:1 replica of Nintendo’s original Game Boy, replete with brick game paks for Super Mario Land and The Legend of Zelda.

No bonus functionality is included; the screen doesn’t light up or play sounds, although multiple lenticular screen inserts are included, so you can swap the display to show scenes from various games or the classic Nintendo boot logo.

These were revealed last week, with preorders opening on July 25. The Lego Game Boy costs $60 and is expected to begin shipping in October.

Notably, official Lego preorders sold out pretty quickly. While there’s precedent for Lego sets selling out and reselling, they’re usually pretty good about keeping their new and upcoming sets in stock up until the release day. Additionally, new sets will generally restock frequently.

It’s only once a Lego set is retired and removed from sale that we see it sell out and begin to resell. The fact that preorders for Lego Game Boy sets have already sold out indicates that they considerably misjudged demand or production has been limited compared to other recent sets.

Whatever the case, this set has presented an opportunity for resellers. With preorders sold out and the sets expected to launch in October, many fans that missed out hit up eBay in search of a set.

Right now, Lego Game Boy 72046 sets are reselling for upwards of $100. It’s still pretty early and we don’t have a lot of data to go off, but this is an excellent early precedent.

Now it’s time to sit back and watch what happens. Lego may load more preorders as we get closer to the October release date, or these might end up being relatively rare among new production Legos and flip for major profits.
