Physical copies of WoW’s Dragonflight Epic Edition are dubbed the “Collector’s Set”, and are reselling
Epic Edition Collector’s Sets sold for $129, and were limited. After selling out, sealed sets now resell for upwards of $400
Notably, there is a digital version of the Epic Edition which has no purchase limits, but this has not seemed to affect the popularity of the Collector’s Set
World of Warcraft’s ninth expansion is proving popular with fans. Released in November 2022, Dragonflight adds to the already wide pool of content in the game. Part of its release included the special Epic Edition for $130. Blizzard made several changes to their release strategy for the expansion, and many fans missed out on the release. Now, sealed copies of the Collector’s Set are reselling for significantly more than than retail.
Dragonflight is the ninth expansion for World of Warcraft. It was released on November 28th at three price tiers: Normal ($49.99), Heroic ($69.99), and Epic ($89.99). Without getting too into the weeds, the premium versions include boosts to in-game progress as well a bundle of special items.
For the serious fans, there is also the Dragonflight Epic Edition Collector’s Set. This is a fully physical version of the expansion, which comes in a sealed box ideal for display. These also sold for a significantly higher price than the digital versions, at $129.99.
Included in the Collector’s Set was a copy of the expansion, a hardcover artbook, a mousepad, and a set of five pins, in addition to the other in-game bonuses included in the digital versions. These items were not released separately, so the only way to obtain them was to purchase a copy of the Collector’s Set.
If you’re wondering where you can buy a copy of the Collector’s Set, you’re out of luck. These were only available through a preorder last April. After all available copies of the Collector’s Set sold out, they were gone for good, and are now only available through third party sellers on eBay and Amazon.
There are several factors behind why the WoW Dragonflight’s Collector’s Set resells. While this not the first time a World of Warcraft expansion has resold, Dragonflight’s Collector’s Sets are reselling for a significantly higher price than past expansions.
For one, Dragonflight’s Collector’s Set was produced in very limited numbers, especially when compared to previous releases. Many fans expected copies to sit in stock for several months, as was the case with previous expansions.
Instead, there were far fewer copies of the Collector’s Set than people thought, and preorders sold out extremely quickly, well before many fans anticipated.
Part of the limited production also meant that Dragonflight’s Collector’s Set was only sold through the Blizzard Store. Ordinarily, copies of an expansion’s Collector’s Set can be found at many vendors, from local game stores, to big box stores, and online marketplaces like Amazon and Newegg.
First time I’m not buying it. No f***ing way I’m paying $54 shipping on a $200 f***ing game
F***ing blizzard.
The Collector’s Set for Dragonflight was only available through the Blizzard Store though, which was not something that was clarified ahead of time, catching some fans off guard. Additionally, selling exclusively through the Blizzard Store meant there would be higher shipping costs for fans outside the United States.
These fans were turned off by the higher price, and decided either not to buy, or possibly wait for additional stock to be loaded, or for Collector’s Sets to become available locally. Obviously, this didn’t happen, and those who missed out on preorders would be forced to buy from a reseller.
Basically, Dragonflight’s Collector’s Set was very different from a typical expansion. Fans had built up assumptions from previous releases, and did not realize that there would only be a very limited number of Collector’s Sets available only through the Blizzard Store.
Those who missed out on the initial preorder were out of luck. As we all know, when unexpected demand meets inadequate supply, resellers profit. Now, sealed copies of Dragonflight’s Collector’s Set are reselling for $400 or more.
It will be interesting to see what Blizzard chooses to do for its next expansion. While many fans were annoyed by the changeup, it will likely lead to increased demand early on. Will they stick with the reduced production? Or will they return to the previous strategy, and reap major profits from the large number of fans trying to buy up stock before it sells out.
