The Stanley craze might be over
Limited edition variants for Swift’s “Life of a Showgirl” sold online
Two collections have dropped, with two vinyl variants for $30 each
Resellers are flipping the records for $60 to $100 at a time
It’s always a good day when Taylor Swift drops new vinyl, especially when she drops a LOT of new vinyl. That’s exactly what happened this week, as Swift revealed her upcoming album “The Life of a Showgirl”, along with a raft of vinyl variants. Resellers were there every step of the way, and we’re already seeing some of the more limited vinyl reselling for considerable profits. While many of these were limited to a single pressing, it’s possible that more profitable vinyl is on the way. Let’s take a look.
If you’ve been reselling vinyl for a while, you know just how profitable Taylor Swift’s releases can be. Not only does she have a legion of fans with money to burn, but Swift likes to release multiple different variants of her vinyl and CDs, and her fans like to collect them all.
We’ve seen this happen a few times, most recently with “The Tortured Poets Department” and her “1989: Taylor’s Version” rerelease. Individual profits might be modest, but they quickly add up across an entire collection.
Last week, Swift revealed her next album “The Life of a Showgirl” and quickly kicked off a hype train with a release set for October 3. Soon after, multiple CD and vinyl variants were listed for preorder through her webstore.
There are two main “Life of a Showgirl” vinyl collections worth paying attention to: the “Shiny Bug” edition and “Baby, That’s Show Business” vinyl. Both collections consisted of two different records sold separately, and both were available for a limited time.
“Shiny Bug” vinyl records dropped on August 18 for $30, and would be available for just 48 hours. “Baby, That’s Show Business” was available for preorder on August 21 for the same price and the same limited window.
Unsurprisingly, all of the limited edition “Life of a Showgirl” vinyl sold out in under an hour. These were listed as “single-pressing” vinyl, meaning that once they’re gone, they’re gone.
And once they were gone, they were headed for eBay. Resellers were quick to jump on both of these drops, recognizing that they would flip for a profit almost immediately after they sold out.
Currently, limited edition “The Life of a Showgirl” vinyl records are reselling for around $60 to $100. The earlier “Shiny Bug” vinyl is a bit more popular and thus profitable, with the bulk of its sales hovering around $100.
Remember, these were not signed vinyl. Nor were they particularly rare. Taylor might have labeled them “single pressing” and “limited”, but that still means a hell of a lot of vinyl would be produced to satisfy her fans.
And even that wouldn’t be enough. Resellers had no trouble at all profiting from this drop, and it might not be too late for you to get in on the action.
With the album’s release still a month out, it’s possible Taylor Swift will be dropping more limited edition “Life of a Showgirl” vinyl records. These have been preceded with a countdown on her website, so don’t hesitate to buy if you get the chance. Returns are easy too, with full refunds within 30 days of receipt.
