Key Points

  • The Shrek 2 soundtrack vinyl retailed for $30 and is now sold out

  • Current resale prices range from $65 to $80 on eBay with multiple active listings

  • First-time pressing after 20 years makes this a collectible for soundtrack fans and Shrek enthusiasts

After 20 years, the Shrek 2 soundtrack got its first-ever vinyl pressing. Interscope dropped an exclusive blue and green vinyl earlier this week, featuring classic tracks in collector’s grade packaging. This flew under most reseller’s radars, but it was a very lucrative flip. Now the sold-out vinyl is flipping for more than double its retail price.

Shrek 2 Soundtrack Official Vinyl Release

When Shrek 2 dropped in 2004, its soundtrack hit the Billboard Top 10 and became one of the most beloved movie soundtracks ever. With hits like Counting Crows’ “Accidentally In Love,” Frou Frou’s cover of “Holding Out for a Hero,” and Eddie Murphy and Antonio Banderas belting out “Livin’ La Vida Loca,” the album defined an era. But for two decades, vinyl collectors had nothing to show for it.

That changed when Interscope announced the first-ever vinyl pressing of the Shrek 2 soundtrack. The special edition features “Shrek Green” and “Sky Blue” colored vinyl in custom printed poly-line sleeves. The pressing includes all 14 tracks from the original soundtrack, from the Grammy-nominated “Accidentally In Love” to Tom Waits’ “Little Drop of Poison” and Nick Cave’s “People Ain’t No Good.”

Shrek 2 Interscope Vinyl Official Release

Limited to one per customer at $30, the vinyl was marketed as an Interscope exclusive. This was a pretty easy flip, especially when compared to the other items we cover.

Because of the low competition, it was trivial to circumvent the one-per-customer limit. That means resellers were able to turn a quick flip into triple digit profits.

The vinyl is currently sitting between $65 and $80 on eBay, with most listings priced around $70. That’s more than double the $30 retail price. After eBay’s 13% fees, resellers are clearing around $30 to $40 profit per unit before shipping costs.

Sold listings show consistent demand at these price points. The nostalgia factor is real here, especially for millennials who grew up with Shrek 2 and now have disposable income to spend on vinyl. The colored pressing and exclusive status add to the appeal.

Shrek 2 Soundtrack Vinyl for Sale

Soundtrack vinyl has been hot for years, and Shrek 2 hits multiple collector sweet spots. It’s a beloved childhood movie, the first-ever vinyl pressing after two decades, and features genuinely great songs that became hits independent of the film. “Accidentally In Love” alone has over half a billion streams.

The limited nature of the release (Interscope.com exclusive, one per customer) created artificial scarcity even though the vinyl didn’t sell out immediately. Resellers who stocked up are now benefiting from that perceived rarity.

Compared to other soundtrack flips, this is performing well but not exceptionally. The profit margins are solid for a low-risk play with a good return policy.

The biggest risk is a restock. Interscope could easily do another run if demand justifies it. There’s also competition from other Shrek vinyl releases, though this is the only Shrek 2 soundtrack pressing currently available.

Bottom Line

If you grabbed this at retail, you’re sitting on a solid flip. The $30 to $40 profit after fees isn’t life-changing, but it’s decent return for minimal effort. The good news is Interscope has a reasonable return policy, so if you bought extras and the market tanks, you’ve got options.

For buyers considering paying $70+ on the secondary market, you’re really paying a nostalgia tax. The pressing quality is standard, and the tracks are all available digitally. But if you want the Shrek Green and Sky Blue vinyl on your shelf, current prices are probably fair given the limited availability.

Hold or sell comes down to your risk tolerance. Quick flippers should list now while holiday demand is strong. Long-term holders betting on this staying a one-off pressing might see better returns in 6 to 12 months, but that requires faith that Interscope won’t do another run.
