Shohei Ohtani Reveals Dodgers Luffy Statue

First, let’s be very clear. This article is going to be very, very speculative. There is almost no real information on these statues, and really all we’re going off is a single social media post. If you’re looking for something concrete, check out some of our other articles.

With that out of the way, let’s get into the facts. It’ll be easy because there’s really not a whole lot. Yesterday, Shohei Ohtani posted two pictures on his Instagram story showing very high quality statue of Luffy from One Piece.

As you can see, Luffy is wearing a Dodgers uniform and throwing a pitch. His arm is bent into a “D” shape, and the text behind spells out “Dodgers”. It’s a very cool collectable for any fan of the Dodgers or One Piece.

And there’s quite a bit of overlap between the two. The team hosted “One Piece Night” at Dodger Stadium on Thursday, with exclusive merch and some very popular cards that are currently reselling.

The timing of the post is no coincidence, and many fans are currently speculating what it could mean. Some believe that it is a 1 of 1 custom statue gifted to Shohei by Bandai Namco. Others are hoping that its part of an upcoming public release.

Without any further details, it’s impossible to say for certain. If these did end up being produced, we feel very confident that they would resell for a profit.

The Dodgers have been on a roll lately, especially when it comes to Japanese-inspired merch. Their recent collaborations with Hello Kitty, Murakami, and One Piece have all sold out and generated tons of profit for resellers.

With an official shout-out from Shohei, it’s practically guaranteed that these would resell. Again, that’s assuming that this isn’t a one-off statue, which we have no way of knowing.

We do have a smidgen of intel to go off of though. Back in February, the LA Lakers also held a One Piece Night. Themed merch was given away to attending fans, mostly t-shirts.

However, during the event they held a scavenger hunt. One of the prizes was a miniature statue depicting Luffy in a Lakers uniform going for a dunk. It appears to be very similar to the Luffy statue Shohei posted on his Instagram.

This statue was not available for sale, and was part of the package given to the winners of the scavenger hunt. Just like with Dodgers statue, there was considerable interest for the statue online, with many Lakers fans asking where they could buy it.

They would never get that opportunity though, and the statues were never produced. Not a great sign for fans hoping to buy the Dodgers Luffy statue Shohei posted, but maybe Bandai Namco paid attention to the hype around the Lakers statues and are planning something special.

That said, there is still a silver lining here, sort of. Even though the Lakers statues were never officially produced, several bootleg versions of the statue were spun up and are currently taking preorders.

The quality is obviously dependent on the manufacturer, but some of them seem pretty decent. Some sellers are already making presale listings for bootlegs, but that’s fairly risky, especially considering that the statues are still available for preorder.

TL;DR: Keep an eye out for an official version of this statue from Bandai Namco. Now that it’s Shohei Ohtani-approved, we can pretty much guarantee that they would sell out and resell quickly.

And even if this ends up being a one-off, expect to see bootleg versions appear for sale. These have been much more popular than the Lakers Luffy statue, so it’s possible that unofficial versions could still resell for a profit.
