Bags were available for just one hour, selling for 475 Robux ($6)
Aftermarket sales exploded, with bags selling multiple times and reaching prices of more than $4,000
Part of a larger collaboration with Gucci, representative of Roblox’s push towards its own metaverse
For a limited time, the most fashionable gamers were able to snag a limited Gucci bag in Roblox. The bags were sold through an in-game marketplace, and players were able to resell them for in-game currency. Prices quickly spiraled out of control, and at it’s peak, the bags were reselling for more than the real-world versions.
We live in turbulent times. Now, more than ever, it’s so important that we stay centered on what really matters. Important issues, like owning expensive virtual bags in a children’s video game.
In May of 2021, Roblox announced a new collaboration with Gucci, called Gucci Garden. The two-week long event offered themed rooms, special badges, and a host of exclusive digital cosmetics available for purchase. It was the ultimate virtual celebration of high fashion, so of course it featured plenty of artificial scarcity.
During the experience, replicas of the 2015 Dionysus Bag from Gucci were made available through an in-game store for 475 Robux. This came out to about $6, and buyers only had one hour to make up their minds. A total of 18,892 sales were recorded, bagging the creator approximately $5,000 of the proceeds.
Immediately afterwards, the digital bags began flipping, with prices quickly exceeding expectations. The highest sale was recorded at 350,000 Robux (around 4,300 worthless American dollars).
Remember, this is not an NFT. There is no proof of ownership, nor does the item exist outside of Roblox’s servers. Additionally, Roblox does not allow its users to cash out Robux for traditional currency, so users would need to get creative, either trading in-game items, or selling the account in full to see a return on their investment.
So, why this bag? And why that price? And why are we writing about this? And why are you reading? Well, probably because it’s funny, at least in part. It’s the same kind of irony that drives value for Supreme Bricks, the idea of throwing way too much money at an objectively silly item.
It’s also a flex, sure. Roblox has seen a boom in its creator economy in recent years, and what started as a game for grade-schoolers has since grown into something much broader. In fact, Roblox now bills itself as a virtual universe, not a game, keeping pace with Facebook’s efforts to establish itself as a metaverse.
Perhaps the vagueness of its value marks the bag as a piece of true high fashion. Is the real Gucci bag worth any more than its simulacrum? Should it be?
