Post Malone has purchased the ultra-rare One Ring card for an undisclosed amount
Estimates for the sale start at $2 million
It’s likely the most expensive MTG sale ever, beating out a $800k sale last June (also to Post Malone)
If you’ve been following Magic: The Gathering’s recent Lord of the Rings expansion, you probably know all about the hunt for The One Ring card. People went wild searching for the serialized one of one card, which is likely the rarest trading card ever manufactured. While the chase was certainly fun and quite profitable for Wizards of the Coast, nothing lasts forever, and the card was pulled in June. We can now finally announce that The One of One Ring card has finally found a buyer, but it might not be who you expect. Yes, Mr. “White Iverson” Post Malone is the official owner of the card.
We’ve written quite a bit about the MTG LotR expansion recently, and obviously The One Ring has been a big part of that. For a deep dive into the card and why it’s worth so much, you can check out our full article here.
Otherwise, here’s a quick TL;DR:
Magic: The Gathering got a Lord of the Rings themed expansion in June that added 462 new cards. One of these was “The One Ring”. In addition to the thousands of standard One Ring cards out there, Wizards of the Coast printed exactly one (1) serialized version of the card, the One of One Ring, which was then slipped into a booster pack like a golden ticket.
When the card was pulled on June 30, a variety of folks had put up bids for it. The last (public) offer before it was officially found was at $2 million.
The One of One Ring MTG card was graded as a PSA 9 shortly after its discovery, and the owner has since been sitting on it. We haven’t heard a ton about their plans for the card until now. Yesterday, we got official confirmation that Post Malone has purchased the One of One Ring card.
If you didn’t know anything about the artist, this news might be a bit surprising. As it turns out, the rapper is a bit of nerd. Aside from crediting his interest in guitar to the video game Guitar Hero and regularly streaming Call of Duty on Twitch, he’s also a big MTG fan.
In 2022, Post Malone and Wizards of the Coast collaborated to produce two limited edition crossover packs of cards. He’s also a semi-regular player on streamed tournaments, and paid $800,000 for a signed Black Lotus card last June. So while the news about The One Ring card might seem like it came out of the blue, it actually makes plenty of sense.
We don’t have an official confirmation of the price Post Malone paid for the card yet. In fact, the only evidence that the sale took place is this TikTok of the star nonchalantly agreeing to buy it.
@brooktrafton When I found the One Ring, the first person who came to mind was @Post Malone. I have played MTG since I was a kid and obviously it would be amazing to keep this card. But for a guy like me, being able to sell it is life changing. I just really hoped it would go to someone who would appreciate it as much as I do. This is my dream come true, meeting Post Malone and him buying the One Ring card from me is literally a moment straight out of a fairytale. Post Malone @Magic: The Gathering you have changed my life. Things like this don’t happen to people like me, I guess it’s magic. I am forever grateful 🙏 ✨ #postmalone #onering #oneofone #mtg #magic #mint #psa #card #magicthegathering #lordoftherings #trading #tradingcards #theonering #sauron #collector #edition #one #gandalf #tradingcardgame
The previous high bid for the card was $2 million and a plate of paella from a card shop in Spain, so we’re anticipating the Texas-raised star will be paying at least that much, along with some good barbecue.
Unofficially, this is the most expensive Magic: The Gathering sale of all time, beating out last June’s Black Lotus sale to… Post Malone. Huh. Well, everyone needs a hobby.
If you’ve been keeping up on MTG’s LotR expansion, you might think the fun ended when The One Ring card was pulled. We have good news, because there are plenty of other cards worth hunting for, many of which are reselling for incredible prices. Check out our article on the MTG LotR Rings of Power cards here for a closer look at what’s worth pulling.
As always, subscribe to our newsletter if you want more updates like these sent direct to your inbox. Cards, cars, coins, crystals; we don’t care. If it resells, we’ll talk about it.
