Resellers Score Major Profits on Olipop's PR Box Drop

Fans of gross-ass soda had the opportunity to pick up exclusive boxes of Olipop at a very agreeable price early today. 5,000 Olipop “Summer PR” Boxes were released through an exclusive partnership with Amazon. With several flavors and some bonus swag, these were very popular. Priced at just five cents, this was an easy grab for pretty much anyone, as long as they acted fast. Now resellers are flipping their PR boxes for much, much more than they paid. Let’s get to it.

It’s a classic problem: you’re thirsty, and you need something to drink. You’re an American, so it has to be a soda, but you also have a shitty diet with no fiber (you’re an American, remember).

Rather than fixing the root issue, you can just drink a probiotic, fiber-infused, startup-funded soda from Olipop. Landing somewhere between kombucha and Mr. Pibb, it’s the perfect beverage to leave in your fridge for months.

And the brand is doing pretty well. Olipop just launched their “Summer PR Box” promotion, practically giving away 5,000 PR Boxes for just five cents each.

The Olipop PR Box includes three flavors of Olipop, a branded tote, a popsicle mold, and a mini bluetooth speaker made to resemble a cassette player. The entire collection leans into retro 80s and 90s styling.

It ties into a larger time travel-themed marketing push the company is undertaking this summer. Olipop has remodeled three rooms at the Austin Motel based on a particular decade, and is currently raffling off four-day stays through their website.

In any case, the Olipop PR Box has been enormously successful. All 5,000 boxes sold out in seconds, which is no big surprise considering the price tag. Of course, they wouldn’t be that cheap when they got to eBay.

It turns out that a lot of people really, really wanted to get their hands one of these boxes. The near-instant sell-out was a pretty good indication, and the resulting eBay sales are too.

Right now, Olipop Summer PR Boxes are reselling for around $40 at a time. Never mind the fact that you can pick up one of these cans for $3 at the supermarket. It seems like the branded tote and mini speaker were just too good to pass up.

Of course, we’re not in the business of telling people how to spend their money, especially if they feel like giving it to us. At just five cents per box, reselling these boxes penciled out to pure profits for anyone involved.

And if you consider that many sellers were able to snag multiple boxes in one order, this was actually a pretty great flip. $40 might seem modest, but those numbers stack up fast after multiple sales.
