Neopets’ 25th Anniversary Blind Box Plushes dropped last month
They retailed for ~$30 and sold out fast
Sealed boxes and the plushes are flipping for over $100
Depending on your age, today’s topic will either be a blast from the past or totally unfamiliar. Neopets recently dropped new merch to celebrate their 25th anniversary. One of these products is a line of “Blind Box” plushes that contain one of eight different Neopets plushes chosen at random. These have been enormously popular with collectors, and we’ve seen resellers flipping both unopened boxes and the plushes themselves for impressive prices.
Let’s set the clock back a few decades. It’s 2005, you just got out of school and you’re racing home to log in on the family computer. It’s time to check on your Neopets.
But time goes by as it always does and now you have a job and a car payment and a shitty hairline. Fortunately, recapturing the fun of your youth is just a few dollars away, and companies have become quite adept when it comes to packaging nostalgia for sale.
Neopets turned 25 last November, and to celebrate they launched new merch online and at select retailers. One of these is the 25th Anniversary Neopets Blind Box plush collection. This was a limited edition product that contained one of eight random plushes based on an iconic Neopet.
You might already be familiar with the “blind bag” concept if you’ve been following our blog. The obvious comparison is a deck of cards, where you don’t know what’s in the box until you rip it open.
Companies have jumped on this idea in the last few years, from grocers like Trader Joe’s, to skateboard manufacturers, and now Neopets. It’s all the fun of gambling with none of the annoying regulations.
Neopets 25th Anniversary Blind Box plushes were around $30 depending on the retailer. Buying them online direct from Neopets’ webstore was cheapest, but also sold out the fastest. They were also available in person at Hot Topic, but could cost as much as $40.
Expensive? Sure, but you haven’t seen anything yet. Millennials love throwing money at nostalgic products from their childhood, and these plushes have been extremely lucrative for resellers.
Right now, sealed Neopets 25th Anniversary Blind Boxes are reselling for around $100, more than double the average retail price. Interestingly, the opened plushes are more popular than the sealed boxes, and we’ve seen some flip for up to $150 at a time.
Collectors will generally pay the most for a sealed box, but it seems like Neopets fans prefer to know what they’re getting before they by. Based on eBay sales, it seems like the Kougra and Aisha Neopets plushes are the most popular, and we’ve seen them sell for the highest prices.
The verdict? Sometimes profitable flips come from strange places. The Neopets fandom wasn’t really on our radar as resellers before this drop, but it sure is now. We’ll be keeping our eyes out for other blind box drops from this company in the future, and we recommend you do too.
Of course, you can just subscribe to our newsletter if you want to have other flips like this sent directly to your inbox. We cover pretty much everything under the sun worth reselling, but you won’t hear about any of it if you’re not subscribed.
