Key Points

  • MSCHF and Mattel teamed up for a special Hot Wheels collection last week

  • MSCHF’s “Not Wheels” were $30 and based on the classic beater car

  • Resellers have flipped them for up to $90

We’ve got a fun one today. The Brooklyn-based art collective MSCHF teamed up with Hot Wheels to produce a limited run of collectable cars. MSCHF’s “Not Wheels” were available through Mattel’s site for one day only, and quickly sold out. Now resellers are listing their Not Wheels cars on eBay for much more than they paid. This is pretty much the definition of a quick flip, and the profit isn’t bad at all.

MSCHF Not Wheels Toy Cars

You know MSCHF, right? While they’re well known within hypebeast and streetwear circles, MSCHF produces a wide range of collectables, physical media, and line-blurring performance art.

From collections of genuine art interspersed with high-quality forgeries, a copyright infringement “Grand Prix“, and the obnoxiously viral Big Red Boot, MSCHF will always be selling something.

And last week that something was a toy car. MSCHF collaborated with Mattel to create their first official Hot Wheels car, dubbed the “Not Wheels”. Lovably designed as a beaten down, riceburning shitbox, these cars were available exclusively through the Mattel Creations website for $30.

Parking tickets, rusty dings, horsepower-boosting bumper stickers; MSCHF has really captured the essence of the horrifically abused, somehow-still-running first car. A missing wheel in the back means the car will not roll, which Mattel explicitly warns customers about.

Not Wheels cars ship in distinct MSCHF packaging that riffs on Hot Wheels imagery, while the back warns the car comes as is; strictly NO WARRANTY.

What we like about this collaboration is its wide appeal. MSCHF fans like it because it’s MSCHF, but it’s also endearing to car dudes that can appreciate a loyal beater.

After they dropped through Mattel’s website, MSCHF’s Not Wheels toy cars quickly sold out. They were only $30, and MSCHF’s name stamped on the project was a guarantee that they would sell out.

Right now, MSCHF Hot Wheels cars are reselling for about $70. Prices have come down a bit in the last few days; immediately after these cars dropped they were regularly flipping for more than $90 at a time.

MSCHF Hot Wheels for Sale

It seems likely that Mattel made quite a few of these cars. This was not some super limited art project, but a major collaboration between MSCHF and Mattel. They sold a lot of cars, so it’s not surprising to see the price deflate on eBay.
