Key Points

  • The set retailed for $100 on November 13 with a two-doll limit per customer through Mattel Creations

  • Current resale prices average around $180 on eBay with some listings reaching $200

  • Mattel restricted the first 24 hours to Fang Club members only before opening to general sale

Mattel just gave collectors a second chance at one of the most sought-after Monster High Skullector dolls, and the secondary market is already responding. The Shining Grady Twins, which originally sold out back in 2020, dropped again on November 13 for Fang Club members. With a generous quantity limit and relatively low competition, this was an easy, low-risk flip with respectable returns.

Grady Twins Skullector Dolls

When Mattel first released the Grady Twins Skullector set in 2020, it became an instant collector favorite. The collaboration between Monster High and Stanley Kubrick’s horror classic was genuinely creative.

These dolls are a yassified reimagining of the iconic twins from The Shining through Monster High’s signature spooky-cute aesthetic, complete with blue babydoll dresses, hatchet hair clips, and platform Mary Janes with hedge maze-inspired heels.

The original release sold out fast, which isn’t surprising given Monster High’s dedicated collector base. The Skullector line has always been premium, targeting adult collectors rather than kids, and horror movie crossovers tend to perform especially well. When you combine nostalgia for both Monster High and classic horror films, you’ve got a recipe for strong secondary market demand.

Mattel clearly recognized the continued interest because they scheduled this re-release for The Shining’s 45th anniversary. The new version comes with a “second release” sticker on the packaging to differentiate it from the 2020 original, plus a certificate of authenticity.

A Fang Club membership was a soft requirement to buy these dolls; as members had early access to buy them before the public sale began.

The presale nature of current listings means buyers won’t receive their dolls until late November or early December, but that hasn’t slowed demand. Multiple listings show 8-12 units already sold, with 60-80 watchers on active listings.

eBay is seeing consistent movement in the $170-$190 range for presale listings. The outlier sales hitting $200 typically include extras like the numbered print that came with some original 2020 releases. Original first-edition sets from 2020 are commanding even higher prices, with some sellers asking $220 and up.

Monster High Grady Twins for Sale

The $80 profit margin makes sense when you consider several factors. First, Monster High collectors are passionate and willing to pay premiums for Skullector releases, especially horror crossovers. We’ve seen this pattern before with the Alien Xenomorph doll and the Corpse Bride collaboration.

Second, the Fang Club exclusivity window created artificial scarcity during the initial drop. Only members could purchase during the first 24 hours, which limited how many units hit the market right away. That scarcity drives up resale values in the short term.

Third, horror movie collectibles maintain strong demand year-round, not just during Halloween season. The Shining has maintained cultural relevance for over four decades, so this collaboration appeals to both doll collectors and horror fans.

What's Next?

We expect prices to stay in the $170-$190 range through the holidays. November and December are peak buying seasons for collectibles, and gift buyers will pay the premium rather than risk missing out. Once presale orders ship and more units reach buyers’ hands in late November, we might see a slight dip if flippers flood the market simultaneously.

The re-release status complicates long-term value. Original 2020 editions will likely maintain higher prices because collectors value first releases. The 2025 version should settle somewhere between retail and current resale prices, probably in the $130-$150 range once initial hype fades.

However, if Mattel produced significantly fewer units this time around, or if they don’t do another re-release, these could hold value better than expected. Monster High Skullector dolls have proven to be solid holds for patient collectors.

Risk Factors

The biggest risk is unknown production quantities. Mattel hasn’t disclosed how many units they’re releasing, so it’s hard to gauge actual scarcity. If they produced more than expected, the market could get saturated quickly once presales ship.

Also worth noting: Mattel Creations purchases are final sale with no refunds. If you buy these specifically to flip and the market softens, you’re stuck with inventory you can’t return. That’s a real consideration given the relatively modest profit margin after fees.

Bottom Line

At $80 profit before fees, this is a decent flip if you already secured units during the drop. After eBay’s 13% fees, you’re looking at around $57 profit per set, which isn’t groundbreaking but works for collectors who love the product anyway.

The sweet spot here is grabbing these at retail if Mattel does another restock, or waiting for the post-ship market dip in late November when some flippers panic-sell. Monster High Skullector releases follow predictable patterns, and patience usually pays off.
