The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Happy Meal launches this week at participating McDonald’s locations
All 12 toys are blind bags, with Birdo and Fire Mario confirmed as US-exclusive characters
Blind bag promotions can be very lucrative, toys could resell for $10 to $20 depending on demand
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie hits theaters April 1, and McDonald’s is getting a head start on the hype. Starting March 26, Happy Meals come loaded with one of 12 collectible keychain figures from the film, and for resellers, the math is simple: you’re paying for a meal you’d probably eat anyway and walking out with inventory that has real flip potential.
McDonald’s is running The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Happy Meal at participating US locations starting March 26, for a limited time or while supplies last.
The full set of 12 keychain figures includes Mario, Fire Mario, Luigi (Frog Suit), Princess Peach, Rosalina, Yoshi, Bowser, Bowser Jr., Bowser Jr. (Wonder), Toad, Birdo, and Yellow Luma. Each comes with a themed backdrop stand that doubles as a display piece.
The toys are blind bags, meaning you won’t know which character you’re getting until you open it. This is both the challenge and the opportunity. Two characters, Birdo and Fire Mario, are confirmed US exclusives, which gives them an edge over the rest of the set if demand builds the way it did for the 2023 Mario Bros. Movie toys.
McDonald’s previously partnered with the Mario franchise for The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023, and that set moved well on the secondary market during the film’s theatrical run. The Galaxy Movie promo has similar momentum behind it, timed almost perfectly to land a week before the April 1 premiere.
The play here is pretty straightforward. Buy a Happy Meal, eat the food or give it away, then list the toy for sale in its unopened blind bag packaging. Even though the collection isn’t set to drop until March 26, we’re already seeing some eBay sales for the toys, presumably from McDonald’s employees that snagged a few.
The better opportunity is in completed sets. Collectors who want all 12 figures will pay a premium rather than gamble on blind bags repeatedly, and sets from the 2023 Mario collab held their value through the theatrical window. If the Galaxy Movie performs well at the box office, expect demand to stay elevated through at least mid-April.
Birdo and Fire Mario are worth flagging specifically. US-exclusive variants have historically driven more collector interest than shared characters, and anyone pulling those on their first few Happy Meals should list them individually rather than sitting on them.
Hit multiple locations to diversify your pulls. If you’re stacking inventory, keep bags unopened until you’re ready to list, since unopened blind bags carry their own appeal for buyers who want the unboxing experience.
There’s no announced end date beyond “while supplies last.” Based on past McDonald’s promos of this scale, expect most locations to carry stock through mid-April, though viral attention can accelerate sell-through fast. The Grinch Meal last December went from plentiful to sold out within days once it hit social media. The Mario IP has considerably more mainstream appeal, so don’t assume you have weeks.
No refund considerations apply here since you’re buying food, but the financial risk is low. Worst case, you paid for a Happy Meal.
