“Longlegs” opened last weekend to solid reviews
Collectable 35MM film strips were given out at some showings
Resellers have flipped them for up to $80
What better way to beat the July heat than ducking into an air-conditioned movie theater and catching the latest Summer horror flick? “Longlegs” is showing at theaters across the country right now, and resellers are taking a keen interest. Some 35MM showings of “Longlegs” will come with a small collectible strip of film from the movie. After similar offerings from “Oppenheimer” and “Dune: Part II” flipped for hundreds on eBay, this is worth paying attention to.
Have you seen “Longlegs” yet? The film features Nicolas Cage as both its title character and the principal producer. It’s receiving strong reviews after premiering last week, with critics and audiences hailing it as one of the most unsettling horror movies released in years.
A lot of this is marketing fluff, with a guerilla team putting together clever teases on social media. One of these is a viral clip claiming Maika Monroe’s heartrate raced to 170 beats per minute upon seeing Nicolas Cage in his full makeup for the first time.
And in an interview with actress Alicia Witt, she indicated that her preparation and performance for the film was so unsettling that she doesn’t plan to watch it.
Sounds spooky! Horror has been enjoying quite a renaissance in the last few years, with features like “Hereditary” and “Skinamarink” managing to both terrify audiences and titillate critics. “Longlegs” has clearly joined the exclusive club of Letterboxd-approved horror.
So how do you fit into this? Well, some theaters are showing a 35MM film version of “Longlegs”, and some are even giving away pieces of the film to audience members.
This is a relatively new marketing tactic, but one that picked up a lot of attention after high profile releases of “Oppenheimer” and “Dune: Part II“. These movies received multiple different film releases, ranging from 35MM to a colossal 70MM IMAX.
Collectable film strips were given away during certain showings, and these would end up on eBay for well over the price of a ticket. Getting one of these strips wasn’t easy, but it was definitely worth it.
So when we say that “Longlegs” is being reviewed extremely well by critics and audience and that theaters are giving away collectable “Longlegs” 35MM film strips, you should be paying attention.
In fact, we’ve already seen some of these strips resell following the opening weekend. It’s still early; volume is low and prices are variable, but we’ve seen a few “Longlegs” 35MM film strips resell for $20 to $80 in the last few days.
That should cover your ticket at most theaters, but you’re on your own at concessions. It’s not the craziest flip, but early sales like these are a great sign.
But you might be wondering how you can actually get in on this. Well, neither the distributor or any of the promotional “Longlegs” social media accounts have posted any information on these film strips.
Based on tweets from people who got one and a few eBay listings, it seems like the IFC Film Center in NYC is mainly where people are receiving their “Longlegs” film strips. Only 35MM showings are handing these out, and they’re likely quite limited.
If you’re in the area, it might be worth buying a ticket through this theater. Otherwise, we recommend doing some Googling for local theaters near you with “Longlegs” 35MM showings. If you can find one, call the theater and ask if they’re offering a similar promotion.
We’ll be keeping an eye on these in the next few weeks. In the meantime, subscribe to our newsletter to stay tuned on new reselling opportunities and quick flips.
