Kirk Hammett released signed copies of his book “The Collection”
1,500 Deluxe copies were sold for $300 and 300 Custom editions were sold for $800
Resellers have flipped the Deluxe copies for $500
Metallica’s Kirk Hammett has a new coffee table book. Fans had the opportunity to pick up one of these 400-page collector’s items last week, and a select few were able to snag signed editions before they sold out. For fans of Hammett’s guitarwork, this is the ultimate bible of every guitar he’s ever used photographed in exquisite detail. Now resellers are listing signed copies of “The Collection” on eBay for nearly double what they retailed for.
It’s been a long career for Kirk Hammett. After Dave Mustaine was fired from Metallica in 1983, Hammett picked up the lead guitar role and has been shredding ever since.
But you can only snort coke and get wasted for so long. At some point you have to rein things in and do mature rock star stuff like opening a winery or riding horses.
Or selling coffee table books. Hammett recently partnered with Gibson and photographer Ross Halfin for a 400 page collection of his guitars aptly titled “The Collection.” Some of the guitars feature include his first Gibson, a 1979 Flying V, and the 1959 Les Paul “Greeny” that was formerly owned by Peter Green and Gary Moore.
It’s the ideal gift or collector’s item for a Metallica fan eager to paw over glossy images of another man’s tools. Standard editions are available for $150, but a limited number of signed copies were available at launch.
Signed “The Collection” books by Kirk Hammett sold for $300, and included exclusive alternate artwork of Greeny, along with a certificate of Authenticity. These Deluxe books were limited to 1,500 units and sold out quick.
And for the most discerning fan, check out “The Collection” Custom Editions. These were an oversized 17″ version of the book presented in high-detail with a unique lenticular cover. Just 300 of these were sold for $800, with each book hand-signed by Kirk Hammett.
Unfortunately for Hammett’s fans with cash to throw around, signed copies of “The Collection” were quick to sell out. Even at the $300 and $800 price point, it seems like there was enough demand to move them fast.
But there’s always a kindhearted reseller out there willing to lend a hand. Following the launch, we’ve seen signed Deluxe editions of Kirk Hammett’s “The Collection” resell for around $500, just about $200 more than they retailed for.
As of this publication, we’ve yet to see any confirmed sales for the $800 Custom editions. Several resellers have listed theirs for more than $2,000, so time will tell if there are fans out there with the cash and lack of impulse control to buy them.
We’ll be keeping our eyes on the market for these books. In the meantime, make sure you’re subscribed to our newsletter to stay updated on everything worth reselling.
