These were one of the most lucrative flips of 2023
The blind bag decks retailed for $100 and sold out on January 29 within hours of release
Current resale prices sit around $250 on eBay with consistent volume showing real demand
Each sealed blind bag contained one of three unique Metal Gear Solid designs with premium foil finishes
Kept you waiting, huh? HUF’s Metal Gear collection has been a massive success, especially the blind bag skateboard decks. These sold out fast with many going to collectors and resellers. Now they’re being relisted on eBay for more than double what they originally retailed for.
HUF has been on a serious gaming collab run lately. After successful drops with Spider-Man, Gundam Wing, and other pop culture franchises, they teamed up with Konami to celebrate Metal Gear Solid’s legacy. The collection featured apparel and hardware all using original artwork from legendary character designer Yoji Shinkawa, pulling from the franchise’s first three installments.
The skateboard decks were the crown jewel of the drop. Each 7-ply maple deck came packaged in blind bags with one of three unique designs featuring iconic Metal Gear artwork. As a blind drop, you didn’t know which variant you’d get until you opened it. Some featured holographic foil and special glitter finishes, making certain designs instantly more desirable than others.
At $100 retail from HUF’s website, these weren’t impulse buys. But for Metal Gear fans and skateboard collectors, the combination of premium materials, limited availability, and the blind bag gamble proved irresistible. The entire Metal Gear collection sold out within hours of dropping.
eBay’s flooded with sealed blind bags listing between $200 and $300, with most finding buyers around the $250 mark. That’s 150% over retail before fees, which works out to roughly $85 profit per deck after eBay’s 13% cut and shipping costs.
The volume’s decent too. Unlike some hyped drops that see a few outlier sales, these are moving consistently. Sellers who copped multiple bags are eating well, and the sealed packaging adds value since buyers get to experience the blind bag reveal themselves.
Individual opened decks are selling slightly lower at $180-220 depending on which variant you pull, but the mystery factor of sealed bags commands that premium. It’s the same psychology that makes Pokemon booster boxes worth more than singles.
The upcoming Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2 could drive renewed interest in anything MGS-related later this year. More franchise visibility usually means higher collector demand across all merchandise.
This was a solid flip opportunity if you caught it at retail. The $85 profit per deck after fees isn’t life-changing, but it’s repeatable. Resellers who copped 5-10 bags cleared $400-850 with minimal effort.
For collectors who missed the drop, $250 isn’t terrible if you’re a Metal Gear superfan or serious about skateboard collecting. The premium finishes and limited quantity justify paying over retail.
The blind bag strategy continues to work. By adding that mystery element and premium finishes to gaming collabs, you have a formula that delivers value for resellers and collectors alike.
