Key Points

  • The Shields Family Collection Wagner graded PSA 1 sold for $5.124 million

  • Only ~60 examples of the T206 Honus Wagner are known to exist worldwide

  • A second Wagner, the SGC Authentic “Garagiola Wagner,” is currently live at Heritage Auctions with bidding at $2.3 million

A piece of cardboard pulled from a cigarette pack in 1909 just sold for over five million dollars. The newly discovered Shields Family Wagner had been framed, warehoused, and passed between generations for 116 years before Ken Goldin called it the real deal. It sold for more than most people will earn in a lifetime, and it wasn’t even the nicest copy out there. The T206 Honus Wagner is that kind of card.

Why is the T206 Wagner So Valuable?

The T206 series was produced by the American Tobacco Company between 1909 and 1911 as a promotional insert for cigarette packs. Wagner, the Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop widely considered one of the greatest players in baseball history, demanded the company pull his card from production in 1909. The exact reason has never been confirmed: theories range from a simple printing plate mishap to Wagner’s objection to his likeness being used to market tobacco to children, to a more mercenary explanation that he wanted compensation for the use of his image.

Whatever the reason, production stopped. Cards that had already been distributed into packs stayed in the world, and everything else was pulled.

The result is one of the most limited production errors in the history of printed collectibles. Estimates put the surviving population somewhere between 50 and 200 cards, though only around 60 are presently documented and accounted for by the hobby. By 1933, the T206 Wagner was already setting records for the most expensive sales for a trading card.

Shields Family T206 Wagner

This card was part of a collection from Morton Bernstein. After his death, the collection passed to his grandsons Dennis and Douglas Shields, who held onto it for sentimental reasons for years without fully understanding what they had.

When they finally reached out to Goldin Auctions, the reaction was skepticism first. “100% of the time somebody sent me an ungraded picture of a Honus Wagner, it’s fake,” Ken Goldin told cllct. That changed when the Shields brothers sent a photo of the framed group of Pittsburgh Pirates cards.

Goldin zoomed in and immediately recognized the Wagner was legitimate. The discovery was later featured on Season 3 of Netflix’s “King of Collectibles: The Goldin Touch.”

PSA graded the card a 1, noting creases and corner wear but no damage to the face of the famous Carl Horner portrait. It received a special “Shields Family Collection” provenance label. It had been in the same family since the day it was pulled from the pack, which Goldin described as unprecedented in his experience with the card.

A New Record is Set

The card went up in Goldin’s Winter Vintage Elite Auction with a $1 million opening bid and sold for $5.124 million including buyer’s premium. That makes it the third-most expensive T206 Wagner ever sold, behind the $6.606 million sale in August 2021 and the $7.25 million private sale in August 2022. Those two examples carried SGC grades of 3 and 2, respectively, meaning they were in meaningfully better condition. The Shields Wagner, at PSA 1, still cleared $5 million on provenance and story alone.

For context, the previous record for a PSA 1 graded Wagner was around $3.1 million in 2022. This sale came in at roughly 65% above that figure.

The T206 Wagner market is unusually active heading into spring 2026. The Garagiola Wagner, an SGC Authentic copy (graded below a 1) that previously sold for $2.52 million in 2021, is currently live at Heritage Auctions with bidding at $2.318 million and six days remaining. That card is named for its former owner, baseball player and broadcaster Joe Garagiola, who reportedly acquired it in a trade that included his 1954 New York Giants World Series uniform. Heritage has it estimated at $3 million pre-sale.

Two Wagners at auction in the same season is not normal. The card typically surfaces publicly about once a year on average, and a fresh discovery like the Shields card comes along every decade or two at best.

If you follow the sports card market at any level, the Garagiola Wagner closing at Heritage this weekend is worth watching. It’ll tell us whether $5 million is the new floor for Wagners or an outlier driven by an exceptional origin story.
