After more than fifty years, Fruit Stripe gum is being discontinued
There’s been a sudden spike in interest in the gum online
Resellers are flipping it for hundreds of dollars at a time
It’s a dark day for people who like shitty gum. Fruit Stripe gum has been officially discontinued, and will soon disappear from shelves. Cry about, write letters to the manufacturer, go on a hunger strike; deal with the news however you like, but this gum is kaput. That said, there’s a silver lining to the situation: Fruit Stripe gum is reselling on eBay for a pretty hefty markup.
First, let’s clarify exactly what we’re talking about. If you’re a Zoomer, you might not recognize the name. Fruit Stripe is (was) a brand of gum developed in the 60s and sold by the Ferrara Candy Company.
It tastes like fake fruit, and is striped in multiple colors. Yipes the Zebra was the gum’s main mascot for most of its production run. For many people, it was enduring part of their childhood, typically sold cheap at grocery stores or handed out on Halloween.
So nostalgia is a big factor here. People like the things they grew up with, even if they lose what little flavor they have after a minute of chewing.
The news that Fruit Stripe gum was being discontinued came earlier this week. If you haven’t been stockpiling it over the last few years, this is your last chance to get a few chews in before the sun sets over the Fruit Stripe empire.
And for those of us that like making money, there’s an incredible opportunity here. Fruit Stripe gum has become increasingly hard to find over the last few years, and now that it’s going away for good, a new market for them has emerged.
Didn’t see that coming, did you? As silly as it might sound, there are clearly a lot of people out there willing to pay out the nose for sticks of gum.
Right now, eBay is full of sold listings for Fruit Stripe gum. Prices vary by package size, but the average sale we’re seeing is somewhere between $1 and $2 per stick. Considering packs contain 17 sticks, and you can find boxes with 5 to 10 packs, there’s a lot of money to be made here.
Ripping off Boomers is always fun. And while Fruit Stripe gum has been discontinued, you can still find it on shelves. In fact, it’s sold at a wide variety of places from bodegas to hardware stores. Next time you’re out, keep a lookout for this gum.
If you like money, that is. We’re not the boss of you, and if making some quick cash isn’t your thing, fair enough. Although, we do have to wonder what you’re doing on this website.
Subscribe to our newsletter if you want to learn more about reselling. We cover all kinds of stuff. Grocery store flips, Stanley tumblers, signed CDs; no matter what it is we’ll talk about it if it’s worth flipping.
