Key Points

  • Over 2 million reservations have been placed for Tesla’s Cybertruck

  • Orders placed today will be multiple years back in the queue

  • Early Cybertrucks could sell on the aftermarket for as much as $200,000

Remember everyone posting those screenshots of their Cybertruck orders back in 2019? Turns out they all might be geniuses. Hopefully, you’re one of them.

The Cybertruck is (almost) here

When the Cybertruck was first unveiled back in 2019, it was supposed to be a 2021 release.

This of course didn’t end up happening—but does it matter? No. Tesla has on their hands the most hyped car of all time. Sorry Mr. Ford, but the Model T didn’t have 2 million reservations.

So long as some unforeseen production disaster doesn’t strike, the first Cybertrucks are going to be delivered to customers starting on November 30th of this year, with production ramping up to full volume sometime in 2024.

It is still unclear how large the initial supply of Cybertrucks will be, as well as which options they’ll be equipped with. That being said, we expect more news on the November 30th batch to be released over the next few weeks.

No Tesla Dealer Markups

So the Cybertruck is hyped beyond belief. And if there’s anything the car market has taught us over the past 4 years, it’s that the more hype a new car has, the higher the margin above MSRP you’ll expect to pay as a dealer markup

Except dealer markups don’t exist with Tesla. It’s a direct-to-consumer car company. When you buy a new Tesla, you’re buying it from Tesla—not a 3rd party dealership. One of the major benefits of this model for consumers is that there are no dealer markups or other typical party games. What you see is what you get. A new Tesla in Chicago costs the same as a new Tesla in Maui.

But that doesn’t mean you’ll be getting one for MSRP anytime soon.

Cybertruck Aftermarket Prices

We believe that early Cybertrucks will resell on the aftermarket for as much as $200,000.

This prediction is based on a number of factors, the most important of which being the vehicle’s popularity/demand vs. current production speed. About 1 month out from release, it’s speculated than around a dozen vehicles per day are being produced… which is a a far cry from the serious initial demand for the vehicle, which can be measured in the tens or hundreds of thousands of vehicles stateside alone.

While Elon Musk has assured investors that production will speed up by the Summer of 2024, that leaves more than half a year of limited production, best case scenario. And in the world of flashy new cars, 6 months is a longgggg time—and some folks are always willing to pay a hefty premium to get their new toy early.

In recent memory, the comparable Hummer EV was selling for 2-3 times its MSRP for over a year after release.

This is all not even considering the alleged 5 year waitlist for the vehicle. An estimate that takes into consideration no production hiccups.

In essence, those that want the car and didn’t place a preorder all the way back in 2019 are completely out of luck, and will have no choice but to buy on the aftermarket, which will create this unique sort of natural vacuum that drives people to the Cybertruck aftermarket.

It is unlikely we will see any Cybertrucks reselling for under $100k throughout most of 2024.

Who will get the early Cybertrucks?

To get an early Cybertruck directly from Tesla for MSRP, it is likely that you will have to had placed a preorder on November 22nd, 2019, when Elon Musk shared a the reservation link via (then) Twitter.

The cost to reserve a Cybertruck was simply $100, fully refundable.

The quicker you placed your reservation after Elon’s Tweet, the better your odds for an early delivery date.

That is, the difference between a 2023 or early 2024 delivery date could have been determined in mere seconds or minutes back when orders were placed. In fact, within 3 days of Elon’s tweet, over 200,000 Cybertruck orders had already been placed.

Summary

The Cybertruck’s release is a massively hyped, unprecedented event in the car world.

And for those that had the foresight to place orders right after seeing Elon Musk’s Tweet in 2019, there will no doubt be plenty of room for profit.
