AMC is selling a Darth Vader popcorn bucket for $40
Cinemark and Regal offer collectable drink cups for similar prices
Most items are reselling for around double their retail price
What a week. Bethesda just dropped their Oblivion Remaster, and theatergoers across the country are rushing to see Revenge of the Sith. If you close your eyes and smell the air, it almost feels like we’re back in 2006.
Like any major motion picture release, theaters have been quick to release collectable merch for the Revenge of the Sith re-release. Chief among these are popcorn buckets, which have become remarkably lucrative options for resellers.
For this release, AMC has cooked up a replica of Darth Vader’s helmet as their collectable popcorn bucket. It’s battery-powered, and plays Vader’s breathing sounds on command (please keep it turned off during the movie.)
Along with the helmets, these buckets are paired with a drink cup and purchases include a large soda and serving of popcorn. AMC is selling their Revenge of the Sith collectable popcorn buckets for $40.
If you’re looking to throw a little more money around, check out Cinemark. They’re selling functional popcorn makers shaped like R2-D2, and you can pull his head off to use it as your popcorn bowl.
Cinemark also sells a replica Darth Vader drink cup at participating theaters, but we’re guessing most fans will be interested in the popcorn buckets, especially AMC’s.
As we said, collectable popcorn buckets are a big business. Theaters are resellers both rely on them to sell out, and it’s not unusual to see them flipping for tidy profits.
Fortunately, it’s quite easy to buy a collectable popcorn bucket, and you don’t even need tickets to see the film. Participating theaters will sell them at their concessions stand, and we recommend not filling them up with popcorn if you’re looking to resell them.
Generally, they are not available online, and you may have to try several locations to secure a bucket. It’s worth calling ahead to try and get an idea of a location’s stock. It’s more ideal if you have a friend or connection working the counter that can set a bucket aside for you.
It’s been a few days since Revenge of the Sith returned to theaters, and we’re already seeing a surge of listings for collectable popcorn buckets on eBay.
Right now, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith popcorn buckets are reselling for around double their retail price. The bulk of these are AMC’s Vader buckets, but many of Cinemark’s Darth Vader drink cups have also flipped for decent profits.
It’s not too late to get in on this flip. The best part is that these are (generally) not a strictly limited product; as long as there’s a cooperative employee behind the counter you should be able to pick up several buckets in one go.
As always, make sure you subscribe to our newsletter if you want to stay tuned in on everything else worth reselling. From signed books to video game vinyl, we’ve got everything under the sun that flips for a profit.
