Key Points

  • Cards Against Humanity sold diamond-encrusted potatoes on Black Friday

  • They were just $70, but the diamonds are worth approximately $1,000+

  • Resellers have started flipping them for $400

Most people think of Black Friday as their opportunity to save some money, but what if you could actually make a profit? Last week, Cards Against Humanity sold a limited number of “Diamond Potatoes” – real tubers studded with real diamonds. After picking up attention online, they quickly sold out and began reappearing on eBay. We’ve seen plenty of listings for both presales and confirmed orders, and it seems like they’re flipping for about six times what they retailed for. Let’s find out why.

Diamond Potato? Diamond Potato

What makes something truly valuable? Hard work and time invested? Provenance? Rarity? Greater men than us have struggled with this question. Cards Against Humanity has come up with an answer, and it’s so stupid it’s brilliant.

Meet the Diamond Potato. If the name isn’t clear enough, allow us to explain. These are potatoes (still following?), with a bunch of diamonds slapped onto them. How’s that for value?

CAH Diamond Potato Explained Sold Out

Accord to CAH, each Diamond Potato has been encrusted entrusted with two carats of lab-grown VVS-clarity diamonds. Real diamonds, we should add, implanted in real Yukon Gold potatoes.

Why? Because it’s funny, at least theoretically. Cards Against Humanity sold their Diamond Potatoes for the as-seen-on-TV price of $69.99 on Black Friday. “Thousands” were made, and they were sold out in under an hour.

What is a Diamond Potato worth?

Cards Against Humanity values the diamonds in these potatoes at over $1,000. We don’t know what kind of bulk deal they might have got, but the diamonds themselves are all individually cut and set in metal prongs.

Which is a long way of saying they probably lost money doing this. They admit as much in their F.A.Q., but they’re also a company known for launching expensive jokes for Black Friday. These potatoes were just a drop in the bucket of their yearly shitposting budget.

CAH Diamond Potato Resells

Fortunately, Cards Against Humanity was able to recoup at least a little of that investment, because all of their Diamond Potatoes sold fast. Ahead of the sale, eBay was full of presale listings asking for hundreds, sometimes thousands of dollars for one.

Now CAH Diamond Potatoes are reselling for around $400. Even after Black Friday, the majority of these sales are for presales, but we have seen confirmed orders flip for that much.

CAH Diamond Potato for Sale Humanity

Cards Against Humanity has stated the Diamond Potato will ship by Christmas, probably. There’s a good chance many buyers will be waiting to get their Potato in the mail, and hawking the diamonds separately.

Either way, this was an opportunity for pretty much anyone to turn a triple digit profit with minimal effort. All you needed to do was enter the queue after it opened and keep your fingers crossed.
