Key Points

  • British Airways’ shopping portal briefly offered 250 Avios per dollar spent at Kate Spade

  • Resellers were able to claim hundreds of thousands worth of Avios valued between 1 to 1.5 cents

  • Kate Spade’s 30-day return policy meant most participants could have exited with zero risk

There are travel hacking deals, and then there is this. In early January, a glitch in British Airways’ shopping portal offered 250 Avios per dollar spent on Kate Spade purchases. At a conservative valuation of 1 cent per Avios, that’s a 250% return on every dollar spent. At 1.5 cents, closer to $3.75 back on every dollar. Resellers who moved quickly on $1,000 to $2,000 worth of Kate Spade bags, held off on returns while things played out, and waited through about two months of uncertainty are now sitting on a windfall. British Airways began distributing the Avios today, and the deal is fully confirmed.

How this Travel Hack Actually Worked

The British Airways Executive Club runs a shopping portal that lets members earn bonus Avios when they shop through affiliated retailers. On January 2, the portal showed an earnings rate of 250 Avios per dollar on Kate Spade purchases, which travel hackers and resellers immediately flagged as a likely pricing error. The normal rate is closer to 1 to 3 Avios per dollar, maybe 15 or 20 for select promotions, so the listed rate was roughly 100 times what most travelers would expect.

What gave resellers confidence to participate was Kate Spade’s 30-day return policy. Most products purchased through the portal qualified for full refunds, which meant that anyone who bought Kate Spade bags and waited to see how the Avios situation developed had a clean exit if things fell apart. The financial exposure was minimal as long as returns were submitted before the window closed.

For the first few weeks of January, nothing happened. Avios did not post, and British Airways made no public statement about whether the promotion would be honored. Then, toward the end of January, accounts began showing the earned Avios as “pending,” which indicated that British Airways was processing them rather than canceling.

This was essentially an all-clear signal that things would work out. Fast-forward to today, March 5, and those Avios are hitting accounts right now. Some RC Elite members have secured upwards of 500,000 points for their purchases.

250X Avios Redeems for Kate Spade Purchases

And the upside is that popular Kate Spade designs hold their resale value reasonably well, with secondary market prices typically landing around 80 to 90 percent of retail. A reseller who spent $1,000 on Kate Spade bags could still sell them for roughly $800 to $900 and keep their Avios, ending up net positive.

What These Avios are Worth

Avios are the rewards currency used by British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, and Qatar Airways, among others. They are primarily redeemable for flights, hotel stays, and car rentals through the British Airways Executive Club portal.

For flights, Avios are generally worth between 1 and 1.5 cents each when booked at reasonable times. Premium cabin redemptions on British Airways and its Oneworld partners can push value toward 2 cents per Avios or higher, particularly for business class on routes served by Qatar Airways. Economy redemptions and last-minute bookings tend to land closer to the lower end of the range.

At those valuations, the math looks like this:

  • $1,000 spent at Kate Spade = 250,000 Avios = roughly $2,500 to $3,750 in flights
  • $2,000 spent at Kate Spade = 500,000 Avios = roughly $5,000 to $7,500 in flights

Hotel and car rental redemptions generally offer lower value, around 0.6 to 0.7 cents per Avios, so flight redemptions are the better move for anyone looking to maximize what they have.

For resellers not already familiar with the British Airways program, it is worth spending some time understanding how Avios redemptions work before committing to a specific booking. The program has quirks, particularly around fuel surcharges on British Airways flights, and value varies meaningfully depending on route, cabin, and how far in advance you book. Booking through Oneworld partners or Iberia often reduces surcharges significantly.

Bottom Line

British Airways made a mistake, and it honored it. Resellers who identified the opportunity in early January, spent $1,000 to $2,000 on Kate Spade purchases, and held through two months of uncertainty are now receiving hundreds of thousands of Avios that can cover flights, hotels, and more.

This is not a repeatable strategy at this point. The portal has corrected the rate. What it is, though, is a reminder that airline shopping portal errors occasionally create outsized opportunities, and the combination of a generous return policy and a patient timeline made this one very low-risk for resellers who caught it early.
