The card boom affected more than just cards

Key Points:

  • Gem Accessories US made a name for themselves manufacturing card-related products during the card boom

  • The DekTech Senpai Wynter deck box was released in winter of 2020 for $35, and would be one of their most popular accessories produced

  • It’s now possible to resell DekTech Senpai Wynter boxes for around $150, and future restocks look very unlikely

Gem Accessories US is a California-based small business that produces accessories for trading card games. These include play mats, bags, and binders, but their most recognizable offerings are their deck boxes. Featuring unique art and high quality construction, Gem Accessories’ deck boxes usually sell out fast. In 2020, they would release a highly limited deck box: DekTech Senpai Wynter. Selling out in a matter of hours, the boxes would restock once, and then never be sold again. Since then, these boxes have resold consistently, proving that you could do more than resell cards in 2020.

What is the DekTech Senpai Wynter box?

Produced by Gem Accessories US, DekTech Senpai Wynter boxes are accessories for playing trading card games. Compatible with popular TCGs like Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh, and Magic the Gathering, deck boxes are used to store and protect the deck being played.

The design of a deck box is a major part of its appeal. While there is no need for it to be visually appealing, many players prefer to add a little flash to their games. DekTech boxes made by Gem Accessories US feature bold designs on high quality material, and are frequently discussed in TCG communites.

Originally known as Gem Play Mats, Gem Accessories US has since become the premier manufacturer of of premium accessories for trading card games, both for collectors and players.

DekTech Senpai Wynter Product

It’s truly a mystery why these boxes were so popular

The DekTech Senpai Wynter box is a variation on the popular “Senpai” theme that Gem Accessories has used in the past. Remember those ahegao hoodies people were wearing in 2020? It’s that, but it also features a busty elf on the inside of the box as well.

Clearly, Gem Accessories US knows their market, as these boxes would sell out extremely fast. It appears as though the initial stock loaded was limited to just 900 boxes, and the queue was pushed to around 4,000-5,000 people attempting to buy.

Did the DekTech Senpai Wynter box restock?

Following the positive response to the initial pre-orders, Gem Accessories US announced that a second wave of boxes would go up for sale. Many fans complained on social media, and it seems like Gem Accessories’ site was not prepared to handle the sudden demand for cards.

Error messages were common and many people reported not being able to add product to their carts even though it showed as in stock. To remedy this, they would announce a restock just an hour later.

However, considering both the extremely limited supply of both the initial stock and the second wave of boxes, it may be that the restock was just a cover for technical issues during release. Given the number of complaints about not being able to buy boxes relative to actual purchases, much of the supply may have not sold due to the website malfunctioning.

Why did the Senpai Wynter deck boxes resell?

While Brandon Chavez, owner of Gem Accessories US, is openly hostile to resellers, it didn’t stop resellers from getting in on the drop and taking stock. Even after restocking, many potential buyers were unable to purchase a box for retail.

The main factor driving DekTech Senpai Wynter boxes resale value was their scarcity. Exact numbers aren’t known, but it’s likely that less than 1,500 boxes in total were made. With 5,000 people competing in a queue, this meant that most would miss out.

Additionally, Gem Accessories US follows a seasonal release schedule. Rather than producing a few products constantly, they do a limited production run of a design, and then retire it permanently. While the Senpai Wynter boxes were a variation on the Senpai theme, they were unique, and as of yet, no retired designs have been reproduced yet.

This makes these boxes very attractive to resellers. One of the biggest risks in reselling is a surprise restock sweeping demand out from under your feet. Given Gem Accessories’ track record, this was very unlikely to happen, and gave resellers confidence to buy in on the product.

Despite multiple factors contributing to a highly profitable aftermarket for these deck boxes, it seems like they were largely missed by resellers. Gem Accessories US is hostile to resellers, to the point of cancelling orders if they believe they are made by a reseller. While there are ways to circumvent this, especially by avoiding listing the items for sale until after you’ve received them, it’s possible this stance was enough to dissuade resellers from trying.

It’s more likely that most resellers simply missed out on this drop though. Despite their popularity within TCG circles, these deck boxes are a fairly niche product. Most people aiming to resell TCG products were typically looking at cards themselves, so these and other items flew under the radar.

Dektech Senpai Wynter resells

The DekTech Senpai Wynter boxes would ship in mid-2021, after a lengthy lead time typical of Gem Accessories’ usual production. Sales on online marketplaces like eBay and Facebook Marketplace are typically around the $150 point. After retailing for $35, this is a respectable profit for little more than a few clicks of a mouse.
