Key Points

  • The Liberty Bell silver medal retailed for $750 and became the fastest of the three pieces to sell out

  • It’s now reselling for $3,500 to $4,000 on eBay, about five times its original retail price

  • Both gold coins remain in stock at the Mint two days after launch

Two days ago the Mint’s Liberty Bell collection went live, and it played out almost exactly how we called it last month. The silver piece flew off the shelves while the gold coins are still sitting on the shelf. Resellers who moved fast on the silver medal are already sitting on serious profit, while gold buyers are stuck weighing whether the secondary market is worth the risk. Two very different outcomes from the same release, and it’s worth breaking down why.

The Mint's Liberty Bell Coin Collection

We covered this collection back in June, and the setup was simple: three Liberty Bell shaped pieces, each capped at 2,026 units, each the first non-round coin or medal the Mint has produced in recent history. The silver medal sold out almost immediately once it went live. The two gold coins didn’t.

That split isn’t surprising in hindsight. $750 for a piece with real scarcity and a once-in-250-years anniversary attached to it is an easy buy for a much wider pool of collectors and resellers. The gold coins ask for five figures before anyone even gets to decide if they like the design.

Liberty Bell Semiquincentennial Coin Silver Gold

At current prices, the Mint is charging more than $700 over spot for the silver medals and approximately 4 to 5 times over spot for the gold coins. This kind of markup is becoming more common from the Mint, and collectors need to learn to live with it whether they like it or not.

Silver Liberty Bell Medals Resell

The silver medal is the story here. eBay listings are consistently selling in the $3,500 to $4,000 range, and even accounting for the platform’s 13.6 percent fee, that works out to somewhere between $2,270 and $2,700 in profit per unit after the $750 outlay.

Silver Liberty Bell Medal for. Sale

The gold coins are a much murkier picture. The half-ounce coin retails for $10,050, and we’re seeing eBay activity anywhere from $10,000 to $11,000. That’s a tight band, and the low end actually sits below retail once you factor in anything at all. eBay treats these as bullion, which kicks in a lower 7 percent fee above $7,500, but even with that discount, a $10,000 sale nets out to a loss of a few hundred dollars once fees are pulled out.

Only the top of that range, around $11,000, clears a modest profit of roughly $180. The one-ounce coin is a similar story: we’ve seen asks as high as $22,000 against a $19,600 retail price, which pencils out to about $860 after fees on a nearly $20,000 outlay. That’s a thin margin for the amount of capital and risk involved.

At $750, the silver medal pulls from serious coin collectors, semiquincentennial buyers, and resellers who just want a shot at a limited piece. At $10,000 and $19,600, the gold coins are competing against spot gold prices that are already elevated, and the pool of people willing to pay a heavy premium on top of that is much smaller. The Mint’s own R&D lab production story and the “first non-round coin” angle only carry a collector so far when the entry price is this high.

Bottom Line

If you copped a silver medal, you’re sitting on one of the best flips we’ve covered this year. If you’re eyeing the gold coins, know what you’re getting into: the Mint offers a seven-day return window, and at these margins, that return policy is doing a lot of the risk management for you.
