175 Kermitzilla statues were sold for $175 each
They sold out fast with many going to resellers
Sales are slowly rolling in at around $350
Got any room on your shelf a weird, wrinkly, plasticky, Muppety thing? Check out these sculptures from artist Dan Douglas. A limited number of these were produced and up for sale yesterday morning. After selling out in seconds, a significant portion of them have been relisted for sale on eBay. We’re already seeing sales roll in, and time will tell how money resellers will end up making from this drop.
Let’s start with a simple question: what makes good art? Technique? Composition? Training? All obviously wrong. Good art is when you combine something popular with something else popular.
With this week’s release of OpenAI’s 4o image generator, you’ve probably already seen the deluge of Studio Ghiblified-AI art. Or as we like to call it: really, really good art.
And today we’re covering another piece of really, really good art with Dan Douglas’ Kermitzilla resin statues. Limited to 175 pieces, these combine Kermit (a green frog) with Godzilla (a big scary lizard) into some really, really, really good art.
Douglas sold these Kermitzilla figures through Bottleneck Gallery for $150 a pop. Each one included a digital certificate of authenticity.
These are similar to a previous line of Cookiezilla figures sold by BNG in 2020. As was the case with both drops, the available limited stock sold out extremely fast, and it didn’t take long for them to reappear on eBay
Because it’s much better to have a full shelf with an empty wallet than the other way around. With only 175 statues made, a lot of people that were hoping to snag one missed out.
Fortunately there are plenty of friendly resellers willing to help out. Since they sold out, we’ve seen around ten of these Kermitzilla statues listed for between $300 and $1,000. Only one has sold so far for $350.
It’s still very early, and BNG is notoriously harsh on resellers. These statues won’t ship for several weeks, and many resellers are electing to hold off on listing them until then to avoid a cancelled order. Expect to see more listings and more sales and we get closer to the ship date.
