There’s a new bloodsoaked, gore-stricken boomer shooter on the market. Move over DOOM, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 launched last month to a thunderous reception. The game has blown up beyond Warhammer fans and is one of the fastest sellers of the years. As is so often the case, good reviews translate to remarkable eBay prices. Resellers are raking it in right now, and things aren’t slowing down soon.

40K Space Marine II Collector Editions

It’s been a big, big year for gamers. Hit after high fidelity hit have launched in quick succession, and gamers’ wallets have been open and their hearts filled.

Last month, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine II launched on consoles and PC. A sequel to 2011’s Space Marine, this is part of a string of recent Warhammer 40K games that released in the last few years.

Following the success of titles like Boltgun, Rogue Trader, and Darktide, Space Marine 2 seemed like it was a solid trajectory all the way through to launch day. 40K fans were definitely excited, but no one anticipated just how far this game would go beyond the target audience.

Within a day of its release, Focus Entertainment confirmed that Space Marine 2 had already sold two million units. In under a month, it became the second best-selling game of 2024 in Europe, and is continuously averaging over 40,000 players per day on Steam.

For 40K fans, this is probably coming as a bit of a shock. Suddenly, their niche hobby is frontpage news, and anecdotal Reddit posts indicate the game’s release has led to a surge in interest at Games Workshop stores.

Like most AAA video games, Space Marine 2 also shipped a limited number of collector’s editions. These included a digital edition of the game, DLC pass, physical artbook, and an 8″ statue of Lieutenant Titus brutally bisecting a Tyranid.

These were available for $250 through Focus Entertainment’s website. Like most video game collector’s editions, they were available for preorder more than a year ahead of launch day and remained in stock for months.

If you’ve been following our blog for a while you know where we’re headed with this. 2024 and 2023 have seen a string of games that have come out of left field and smashed sales records.

And this time it’s no different. When a game sells well, its collector’s editions sell better. Right now, Warhammer: Space Marine 2 Collector’s Editions are reselling for more than $700 at a time, with a ton of sales in September alone.

Not too surprising when you consider all the factors, but if you time traveled a year back and told a 40K fan what just happened they probably wouldn’t believe you.

In any case, this is an “everyone wins” situation. Saber Interactive is getting recognition for a well made game, resellers are taking home hundreds of dollars in profits, and 40K fans are getting the collector’s editions they want. Good thing they’re used to spending money.
