Sony recently unveiled a 30th Anniversary edition of the PS5

If you have fond memories of reselling consoles, we’ve got a great opportunity for you. Sony has confirmed a special version of the PlayStation 5 will be produced for the platform’s 30th Anniversary. These throwback consoles have already been teased online, and are expected to release in November. Fans, collectors, and resellers are all lining up to snag theirs, and there’s little question that these will resell for a profit. Let’s dig in.
Well, if you didn’t know, PlayStation turns 30 this year. The first PS1 reached Japanese consumers in December 1994, and in just a few short decades we’ve received the PlayStation 5.
To celebrate this milestone, Sony has produced a highly limited variant of the PS5. Dubbed the 30th Anniversary Edition, these consoles are finished in a flat gray with a vibrantly multicolored Sony logo – a clear throwback to the PS1.
While the PlayStation 5 got a lot of flak for its appearance, this is actually a pretty nice looking console. The package also includes two specially skinned DualSense controllers for a matching set. Both disc and discless versions will be available.
Sony has warned that this collection “will be sold in highly limited supply”. Just 12,300 total Anniversary PS5 Pro consoles will be produced, with each console’s number etched into its case.
Take careful note of the wording there, though. Sony has only explicitly stated the “Pro” versions of the console will be numbered, so those are the ones to be focusing on.
While the collection is set to release in November, Sony will be opening preorders for the PlayStation 5 Anniversary Edition on September 26. Here’s how it works:
For the Pro bundles, Portal remotes, and individual controllers, preorders will be available exclusively through PlayStation Direct on the 26th. No exact time has been provided yet.
For the rest of the collection, preorders will open on PlayStation Direct, but also through other retailers like GameStop at the same time on the 26th.
Sony has not confirmed any prices for the PlayStation 5 Anniversary collection. The PlayStation 5 Pro has a (widely mocked) starting price of $700, but considering the extra controllers and extreme rarity of the collection, PlayStation 5 Anniversary bundles may cost over $1,000.
Yes, we certainly think so. PlayStation has always held a larger market share than Microsoft’s Xbox, and that’s translated in higher demand and higher prices for resellers.
If you were buying (or selling) a PS5 during the pandemic, you should know that already. PS5s were routinely reselling for over $1,000 at a time, representing some of the easiest money a well-equipped reseller could make, along with some pretty entertaining eBay hatemail.
And while the pandemic might have restricted supply, remember that there will only be 12,300 PlayStation 5 Pro Anniversary editions. These consoles are already picking up positive attention on social media, and there will not not be nearly enough to go around.
Expect the sale next week to be a bloodbath. Sony fans will be tearing at their screens to get one of these consoles, along with most resellers. The odds are long but the potential profits are very, very good.
We’ll publish a follow-up article closer to the preorder window’s opening, which will include PlayStation 5 Anniversary Edition prices and release times. Stay tuned.
