Key Points

  • Topps has produced a card based on Tom Brady’s drafting to the 1995 Expos

  • At the same time, Mitchell and Ness released a jersey that he would have worn

  • No sales are recorded yet, but the jersey is almost sold out

If you’re into weird sports esoterica, we have something you might like. This week, Topps released a new Tom Brady trading card. Instead of his usual Patriots garb and football gear, Brady is wearing a jersey for the Montreal Expos. Yes, the Canadian baseball team that has been out of the league for nearly 20 years. At the same time, Mitchell and Ness rolled out a matching Tom Brady Expos jersey. Let’s take a look at this collection, and try to see if it’s worth going after.

Why is Tom Brady wearing an Expos Jersey?

Alright, let’s talk about sports. You like sports right?

If you didn’t know, December 12 was Tom Brady day, at least according to Topps. And as part of the celebration, the company had a profoundly weird announcement. Check out their commercial here first for the full experience:

For the upcoming Bowman Draft 2023 set of cards, Tom Brady is one of the potential pulls. But wait, isn’t the Bowman set based on baseball? And didn’t Tom Brady debut like 20 years ago? Why is he in a set for new draft picks?

Well, to answer these questions we’ll have to turn back the clock to 1995. Coming out of high school, Tom Brady was a highly regarded athlete in multiple sports. Of course we know him for football today, but at the time he was actually getting the attention of baseball teams at the time.

As a power-hitting lefthanded catcher, Brady had filled a unique niche in the sport. During the 1995 MLB draft, the Montreal Expos selected Tom Brady during the 18th round.

But as we all know, Brady would opt for football, and the Expos would continue their death spiral in following years. The team would be sold to the MLB in 2001 and then relocate to Washington D.C in the 2005 season. Today, they’re known as the Nationals.

Tom Brady Expos Jersey from Mitchell and Ness

There’s your useless sports trivia for the day; use it wisely. Topps has been promoting this card heavily, and it doesn’t stop at the commercial above.

Mitchell and Ness is producing a Tom Brady jersey based on his theoretical appearance as an Expo. On the back is a number 12 (duh), and a small “Tom Brady” nameplate is embroidered on the front.

Tom Brady Expos Jersey

Tom Brady Expos jerseys are limited to just 508 total units, a reference to Brady being the Expos 507th draft pick in 1995. Each one is clearly numbered as well.

Mitchell and Ness are selling their Tom Brady Expos jersey for $300 through their website. As of this writing, it’s still available.

Will the Tom Brady's Expos Jersey Resell?

And back to the big question. Unless you’re a sports nerd with an absolutely insufferable need to impress people with unimportant minutiae, this jersey is mainly interesting as a potential flip.

Only 508 being produced is a pretty good sign, and we’re already seeing a few sizes sell out. As of this writing, everything between medium and 2XL is gone.

Tom Brady Expos Jersey For Sale

The popular reception to this jersey has been pretty hostile. Even if you understand the design, it’s a pretty weird one to spend $300 on. A lot of people are just confused by it too.

That said, there definitely is a market for obscure sports merch. We covered the “Princess Diana” Eagles jackets also made by Mitchell and Ness a few weeks ago, and those have been consistently reselling for more than $1,000.

Will this jersey go the same way? Probably not, but we do expect to resell for a modest profit. There are already listings for it going up on eBay. Now we just need to see what people are actually willing to pay for what’s essentially a meme.
