Vegemite produced 1,000 miniature pieces of toast made from silver
These sold for $200 AUD on Wednesday
Resellers are flipping them for up to double what they retailed for
Earlier this week, the makers behind the iconic spread Vegemite produced a special collectible. Vegemite turned 100 years old this year, and to celebrate the company sold 1,000 pieces of silver toast with the Vegemite logo stamped on it. Naturally, this kind of opportunity was incredibly exciting for fans of the spread, and the collectibles sold out quickly. Many resellers bought up these items and are now hoping to turn a profit by flipping them.
If you’re not in the know, Vegemite is an Australian spread developed in the early 1920s from a combination of yeast, vegetable stock, and spices. It’s become an enduring part of the Australian identity, and has since branched out into global sales.
It should be no surprise that after 100 years the spread has picked up a few fans. Since 2023 marks the hundredth anniversary of the spread’s sale, the company has been producing several collectibles to cash in on the popularity.
What we’re covering today are Vegemite Fine Silver Mini Toasts. The small squares measure about an inch in each direction, and are made from an ounce of 9999 fine silver, meaning they are almost completely pure. Each piece of mini toast has a mini bite taken out of it.
The also bear a distinct Vegemite stamp. The Fine Silver Vegemite Mini Toast collectibles were sold on October 25, at 9 A.M. AEST (Australian East). Unlike previous collectibles, these items were not sold globally and were an Australian exclusive.
Only 1,000 of these Vegemite Mini Toasts were made, and they cost $200 Australian (around $125 USD). Considering the remarkable purity of the silver used and the limited amount made, this is a pretty reasonable price. Vegemite states that it may take up to three months for the mini toasts to start shipping.
Like we mentioned before, these silver mini toasts are not the only collectible Vegemite has produced in 2023.
Back in May, the Australian Royal Mint struck a limited run of $1 coins bearing a jar of Vegemite on them.
Even more notable were the special silver replica Vegemite jars sold during the summer. Only 500 of these were available in two sizes for either $160 or $320 Australian, and would sell out quick.
While these jars would resell on their own, there was also an even more rare and much more valuable version. Everyone who purchased a silver jar was put entered for a chance to win one of five gold-plated jars.
Silver Vegemite jars are reselling for upwards of $500 USD, but at least one gold-plated jar sold for nearly $4,000 USD.
Clearly there was significant interest in these collectibles and the Vegemite brand, which is why resellers were paying attention to this latest drop.
It’s only been a few days, but we’ve already begun to see aftermarket sales of the 100 Year Anniversary Mini Toasts. Because these were limited to Australia, it seems like a market has emerged to ship them overseas.
Currently, a silver Vegemite Mini Toast collectible is reselling on eBay for around $300 USD. Even though there’s no special promotion for these items like there was for the silver jars, it still seems like people are eager to have one.
What do you think? We’re a U.S. based blog, so Vegemite is not really part of our daily diet. Australians certainly seem to feel strongly about it, enough to fork over hundreds of dollars to a reseller to get one.
This will likely be the last piece of memorabilia Vegemite produces for their 100 year anniversary. Between these and the jars, 2023 has been great for resellers on both sides of the Pacific.
