Key Points

  • Topps’ first X-Men ’97 trading cards dropped yesterday

  • Hobby Boxes were $120 and Cases were $960

  • Resellers are flipping Boxes for $200, Cases for $1,600

Yesterday morning, Topps released a new collection based on the hit animated series X-Men ’97. These have been enormously popular with collectors, and all of the stock available for preorder quickly sold out. Resellers were there from the beginning, and we started to see profitable sales within five minutes of the sale closing. Let’s take a closer look.

X-Men 97 Topps Finest Hobby Boxes

Are you familiar with X-Men ’97? It’s a retro-revival animated series that continues the storyline of the original X-Men: The Animated Series. The show launched on Disney+ in 2024 and has been a major hit with Marvel fans.

Naturally, new merch quickly followed. We’ve already covered a line of X-Men ’97 Cyclops figures released by Mondo a few months ago, and now Topps has entered the scene.

Topps finally released their X-Men ’97 trading card series after months of hype. Packs included tons of retro X-Men designs, rare parallels, and even a handful of voice actor autographed cards.

Topps Finest X Men 97 Hobby Box

Topps Finest X-Men ’97 Hobby Boxes retailed for $120. Each box included 12 packs with 5 cards per pack for a total of 60 cards per box. They also sold Collector’s Cases at the same time with 8 boxes per case for an MSRP of $960.

As you can probably guess, trading cards like these are the ideal stomping grounds for resellers. Low volume (relatively), extremely high collector interest, inflated MSRPs. What’s not to love?

So when yesterday’s preorders closed and disappointed fans were met with a “sold out” message, what options were they left with? Wait for a restock? Buy something else to put on their shelf? Move on with their lives?

Of course not. Right now, Topps Finest X-Men ’97 Hobby Boxes are reselling for around $200, netting resellers about $80 in profit depending on fees. Reselling cases was the way to go, as these are usually flipping for about $1600.

It’s the same relative profit margin compared to flipping individual boxes, but requires less effort and less fees. If a collector has no issue paying nearly $1,000 for one of these cases at retail, well, what’s a few hundred more?

And that’s pretty much the whole story. New cards come out, resellers make a lot of money.
