New SpongeBob Xbox Flips for Over $1,500

Just before the weekend, gamers across the world had a chance to acquire something truly unique: a brand new Series X with SpongeBob’s face plastered across it. Intrigued? Interested? Aroused? At $700, this bundle wasn’t cheap, but it seems like the demand for these was strong enough for to not only sell out, but resell. In fact, we’re already seeing numerous sold listings for these on eBay exceeding $1,000 or even $1,500. Who would have thought?

For resellers, 2020 was one of the best years in recent memory. While the popular belief was that the pandemic would bring the economy to a standstill, stimulus checks and product shortages actually created a ton of new opportunities to resell items for a profit.

The ninth generation of home video game consoles launched at the end of the year, and new PlayStations and Xboxes were on everyone’s mind. Resellers could easily expect to double or triple their money for every console flipped.

And while those days are mostly behind us, there are still halcyon glimmers that appear from time to time. On Thursday, special edition Xbox Series X consoles went up for sale exclusively through the Best Buy App.

Yes, it’s SpongeBob. The new consoles were created as a promotional item for the video game Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2.

Each bundle includes one special edition console, a special controller, and a digital copy of the game for $700.

How to get a SpongeBob Series X

These were a pretty unique item. You could only buy them through Best Buy, and they weren’t even sold at stores or through their online store.

The only way to get a SpongeBob Series X bundle was through the Best Buy App as part of the Best Buy Drops program. They were available at 7 A.M. Pacific through the Drops tab, and they sold out fast.

An official release from Xbox Wire notes that “once the drop goes live, it will only be obtainable while inventory remains.” While that’s obvious, it also implies that these are quite a limited item. Once they’re gone (which they are), they won’t be coming back.

And where there’s scarcity, there’s opportunity. Resellers were well aware of this drop, and those that decided to get in on it have set themselves up pretty well. How well?

Hmm, somewhere to the tune of up to $1,000 in straight up profit. Right now, the Best Buy exclusive SpongeBob Series X console is reselling for upwards of $1,500. There’s not a ton of sales, but any time a product sells for such a high price it’s worth paying attention to.

Several more are listed for sale on eBay right now, which the average asking price usually a bit under $2,000. Time will tell if people will meet this price, but judging by early sales combined with the fact these likely won’t restock, we’re pretty optimistic.
